Yet more confusion

I am in the very early stages of learning web-design. I am getting a basic idea of HTML as it relates to what is seen in the browser. I have read a lot and ordered a book that is recommended on this site.

Reading the critiques in the critique forum, I see such as " don't use HMTL to align a header, use CSS," and some other arguments against HMTL coding in the websites in favor of acronyms I don't know the meaning of.

Am I wasting my time with the HTML? Should I be selective in learning just certain parts?

Thanks
Darryl

Re: Yet more confusion

No, you're definitely not wasting your time with HTML, you need to know HTML. CSS is not something to be used instead of HTML, but alongside it. The CSS is where you should be defining the presentational and style elements of the site, the font, colour scheme, layout etc. Sorry, I should have a couple of links here to point you in the right direction, but I haven't! I'm sure someone else will come up with some!

Here we go, here's a good place to start for CSS:

Learning web design is 2 steps forward and 1 back. But before you know it will be moving forward at a steady pace...

Yes, I am spending time and using up resources from a limited amount of brain cells, going through the HTML tutorials, to find later that some of the stuff is no longer the standard.

Re: Yet more confusion

Go here for HTML and CSS tutorials and rest assured that this is the way to learn. The stuff detailed here adheres to modern standards that many pro's have not yet caught up to. They are basic but should get you started, there are even examples, a great list of CSS properties and HTML elements not mention a matching book if you want to spend a bit of money.

It'll be pretty good going if you follow along carefully, and if you get stuck then just ask here.

Pete.
