You will need to know some CSS too if you are going to create a website.

Check karrine's sig. There are links there to some useful threads!

Re: How do I get started

It's dead easy really. Just try and do what you want to do, if you want to do something on your site and you don't know how then just ask. Simple. It's a learning process but it's relatively quick one if you use resources like this forum to help you along the way.

Oh and welcome to the forums.

Pete.

Hi Cracka,

Here are some tip for you.

Learn html.
Then learn css.
Then learn to use HTML AND CSS together.

If all goes right, you margins show be out in I.E 7 and I.E 6 but looks good in Firefoxs.

Re: How do I get started

Hi

For a music website you need to captivate the user. I spent 2 years with an up and coming band designing there website getting 3000 hits a day.

You need to teach yourself some PHP scripting as there is a lot you can do with PHP.

You also need to consider a hosting site which supports streaming video and music.

www.theglory.co.uk

Unfortunately the band split up at Christmas but i use there website as a show case. I even created a demo area so that they could send links to Record companies which had a Biography and some of there tracks.

Its a bit of a slog but definately learn PHP, and possible Flash.

Re: How do I get started

Hi

I actually use the same host for all my sites, i have been using them for 10+years and i get discounted rates.

If you look at my hosting page on mysite you get an idea of whats supported. If you want to go through me just drop as a note through my site.

Now the following forum is who i use as (not sure if i should promote other forums.)

http://www.dreamweaverclub.com/vtm/php-mysql-apache.php

There are some excellent videos to watch which show you step by step guides to PHP and MySQL. I purchased a lot of books to help me and then i used to play around to get what i want.

www.adobe.com is a good resource as well, lots of tutorials as well.

If i where to do the site again i would not use flash so much as search engines struggle with crawling the page.

www.flashkit.com

Is another useful site for flash as you can download a lot. Google is the best bet for finding tutorials.

Re: How do I get started

Really, you need to learn HTML and CSS first. From the sound of it, you don't know either one. Those two languages will help you get your site from a Photoshop template to a standards-based website.

Re: How do I get started

What do you mean by creating webpage in Photoshop? Photoshop ain't no webpage making software. Use Dreamweaver or something of that kind.

I started in Dreamweaver, but the tutorial took me in too deep and complicated design paths at once.

The best way, by my opinion is to start writing in some plain web design software - Notepad ++ is a good start. One has to understand the basics - why <p> goes here and why </p> goes there, and so on. That can't be understood by using a software that does it istead of you (i.e. Dreamweaver) because by working so you'll never understand the language. AND then will come errors which you will not understand either.

Using Photoshop is a GREAT way to create your layout It's used like the pen & paper is used ... to draft out you design. For some ... it's just easier.

Re: How do I get started

Yeah, like everyone else said. Just start with learning XHTML and CSS then expand into other areas that interest you, such as PHP or Flash...etc. But most of all have fun and enjoy what you are doing!
