what do I need to learn?
I'm new to web design, and so far I understand how to do html, css, and I'm learning javascript. I would like to learn how to build ecommerce sites, but I don't know where to start or what I need to learn. I would really appreciate it if I could get a simple step by step list of what is necessary to know for ecommerce (tools, programs, languages, etc). Thanks

Re: what do I need to learn?
There is an incredible amount of effort in creating a safe and proper functioning e-commerce site.
I would suggest that as you are new to web design and coding you have some way to go yet before you tackle something like this. If you need to incorporate e-commerce features into a site, then look at integrating an existing system. There are many to choice from to suit all needs and wallets. |

Re: what do I need to learn?
To do E-commerce websites and be successful at it you need to have the following:
Knowldedge of ASP, ASP.NET, PHP, or JSP (Though JSP is difficult and bloated in my opinion) Understand how commerce works. Syntax won't get you there. The ability to turn complicated coding into a User Friendly Environment The ability to secure transactions (SSL Certs + Secure Coding) A database (DONT USE ACCESS!!!!!) Knowledge of SQL And last but not least, Customers :P. That's a very short list and about as simple as it gets. The biggest thing about E-commerce sites is security. Things to remember, NEVER send credit card information out over emails. A lot of E-commerce programs do this and this is horrible security.

Re: what do I need to learn?
Absolutely agree with NoobSmith. Security is A number 1. I have been working on an E-commerce site and it can be a real adventure. There are several good existing open source e-commerce. ZenCart or OScommerce come to mind. Take a look.
