Rollover thingy-ma-jiggy!

Hey'a guys,

I am a total newbie at webdesign (bet you've never heard that line...lol). Anyway, I am using WebEasy Pro 6, and am trying to design my first website using soley wysiwyg (sorry to all those HTML purists!). Anyway, I am going ok considering I've only been using it for a few days, but I can't find out how to do a particular effect I want. I don't know all the 'in house' web design speak, and so am not sure of the name of it. I think it is similar to a 'rollover' except I want to display a text box when the cursor rolls over the text link. So just to make that clear, for example....I have a text link called 'Guitar Tabs', and I want to make it so that when I put my cursor anywhere on the text link, a small text window appears with text saying something like 'A selection of songs in guitar tablature format'.

Ok, so I hope I explained that adequately.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Michaela

Re: Rollover thingy-ma-jiggy!

HTML purists?! Hmmm ... no ... more like people who like to do the work themselves and not trust the WYSIWY(sometimes)G

Hand-coding is always the best way to get you page done properly. I mean ... you wouldn't want a machine kissing your girlfriend for you would you? So ... don't let the machine code the page for you ... do it yourself.

Looks like you want to add the title attribute (or maybe the alt attribute)

The alt and title attributes
The title attribute
Proper Use of ALT and TITLE Attributes

Re: Rollover thingy-ma-jiggy!

Hey'a Karinne,

Thanks for that, will look it up.

Um, yes I'd be more than fine with a machine kissing my girlfriend. In fact I might even consider paying it large sums of money, just so I wouldn't have to......being a woman, I definitely prefer kissing men......(inparticular, my husband!)...lol.

Cheers,

Ok, just had a look at the links, and I really don't know what they're talking about. See I would have to learn all about coding right from the start (take a long time) to know what they're going on about. Which is why, because the option is available, I prefer wysiwyg. It may not be the 'proper' way according to some to design a site, but it is a possible, and available way to do it....and one I plan on taking advantage of (just as soon as I get to understand all it's terminology.....lol). Thanks for your help though.

Re: Rollover thingy-ma-jiggy!

What kind of pop-up text are you after?

If you're after the creamy-yellowy boxes that occur most places on the web when you hover over anything, as Karinne pointed out that's an alt attribute...

As I say, I'm not entirely sure what you're after...

But if that is what you want, you simply need to go into the code part of your editor and find something that looks similar to this:

Code: Select all
<a href="http://www.something">Guitar Tabs</a>
and alter it so that it says something akin to:

Code: Select all
<a href="http://www.something" alt="Your pop-up-text here!">Guitar Tabs</a>

If you're looking for something a bit more fancy, explain what you're after here; and I'm sure we'll be able to give you helpful advice on how to do it without going into the code too much!

Re: Rollover thingy-ma-jiggy!

G'day snow,

Sounds like Alt Attribute is the one. Yes, it is the same as on many sites where a yellow box pops up from a link your run your cursor over, with text in it. I'm still trying to figure out how to view the code in my wysiwyg software...lol. But I'll get there! Darn it all!

Thanks

Ok, I just looked up 'Alternate Attribute' in the help menu, and it doesn't have it. But I did find something called 'Add Text Layer' which upon reading the definition, seems to be the equivalent of what you are saying. Does that sound correct?

Re: Rollover thingy-ma-jiggy!

The title attribute will show the tooltip in all browsers. Alt only does it in a few.

And you just write like a girl, hehe

Re: Rollover thingy-ma-jiggy!

Ha! Well, did you notice when you first said I 'wrote like a girl'..lol. That was AFTER I said I was. So I was intrigued by your Gender Genie, and went to that page to take a look. I'm not too happy about it though. It gave me a complex about my femininity! Here are the results! LOOK HOW MANY MALE ATTRIBUTES MY PASSAGE OF TEXT HAD!!!! What am I to do!

Words: 118
(NOTE: The genie works best on texts of more than 500 words.)

Female Score: 94
Male Score: 179
The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: male!

You can add the title attribute like Ryan was referring to by doing the following bit of code.

Code: Select all
<a href="http://www.yourdomain.com/billybob.pph" title="Yellow thing here">

Re: Rollover thingy-ma-jiggy!

I wonder why every browser chose yellow. There are so many more colors that are prettier.
