Question Help please with multiple audio on page

Hi everyone.

I have put together a small site and one of the pages I made is driving me nuts. The page in question is http://sghe900.50webs.com/moddingdownload.html

The page contains 23 links to smallish wav files. Originally I just had links but this was a pain because clicking on a link would launch the helper app so then I tried embedding the files which was no good either as the page was over 2MB.

So then I settled on creating a load of one track m3u playlists and embedding those. This works fine except that browsers now take too long to render it because of all the Quicktime controllers. <sigh>

I'm certain there must be a more efficient way of going about this but I just can't think straight any more.

Could someone please suggest a way of streamlining things?

Thank you.

One way that used to be quite popular was causing a tiny little new window to pop up when you click the title and the clip plays in that window, but a lot of people block pop-ups (me included) so they'd have to 'allow' your site before this would work. It can also be a bit irritating.

You could always try some kind of embedded music player wherby the user clicks the title of the track and it plays back in the player (a la myspace). There a couple of free ones floating around the net. Could be an option.

Pete.

New windows was something I was trying to get away from. Annoying enough normally but doubly so when the sound files are only a few seconds long. I have used the <object> & <embed> tags to get quicktime controlers to appear on the page but as there are 23 of them it takes the browser forever to render them. So far, I have progressed away from having all 23 wave files downloading to the client browser but its not much faster

Check the wimpy player it might suit your needs but isn't free. I'm sure there are similar things knowcking 'round for free.

Hi Pete. Thanks for the suggestion. I gave it a try but ended up with a much larger download (285KB vs 77.5 KB) although it rendered really quickly, presumably because the button is much simpler. A 200KB download is fine with a fast broadband link but I'm looking at over a minute over a dialup link.

Guess I'll have to keep looking although this is starting to drive me crazy.

Thanks for your help.

Joe

Hurrah. I finally solved the problem using a freeware flash player called XSPF Music Player, Button version which I found on http://musicplayer.sourceforge.net/

It works - now the page both loads and renders reasonably quickly.

Just been reading up on CSS 2 and am getting rid of all the tables
