Limewire????

hi, im new to website design and am sure i will ask many many stupid, obvious questions throughout my posts on webforumz.

Anyway i was wondering if anyone could please inform me how difficult it is to set up and interface like Limewire, BearShare, Napster. u know something you download files from and can equally upload files to.

Would this be very difficult and if so does anyone know how much it could costs me to get a designer to do something like that?

anyway hope someone can help me with this, thank you for reading my post.

Timothy.

Re: Limewire????

Well, I'm afraid you're in the wrong forums for that. This is a web design forum. You'll need to hunt a good programming forum down, although I have no idea what languages you'll need. I would estimate the costs to be very high for this...

Re: Limewire????

Hi,

Limewire and the like aren't websites that you upload/download stuff to and from. They're peer to peer applications that link computers that have the software installed on them to each other. This forms a kind of massive server that people can use to download files from any of the users shared folders. You have to be part of the system to use it. Clever, eh.

You would need to use a programming language to develop an application like that. And I would imagine it would be very complex.

However if you wanted to set up a site like http://www.soundclick.com were users upload music and other users can download it then that's a little bit simpler. Well it can be anyway. You will still need an application to power it all but it will be a web application so the language used to create it is at least a little simpler.

I would suggest a good grasp on html, css, then one of php, asp or the like. You could always use an existing cms there are many, but to get it to do what you want you would need at least a basic undestanding of something like php.

Dunno if I was of any help.

Pete.

Re: Limewire????

Naw, PHP is only for websites. He wants an application that runs outside of the browser window.

Re: Limewire????

I know but he could build an online application that people could upload/download stuff to/from. And since he said he was new to web design not software programming, I thought it might be an option for him.

I mustn't have been very clear.

Pete.

Re: Limewire????

My point of view of the whole thing is, if you don't even know what language to use and where to begin, then you're in WAY over your head.

Peer-to-peer application are probably done with Java mostly.

Not sure if I follow but if you have a web host (somewhere to store your site/forum so that other people can access it) and a domain name. Then all you need is to upload a forum or what not and you have a site really. The domain name is just the address, it's unique so people will always know where to find your site. A lot of the time if you buy a domain you get basic hosting thrown in.

Hope this helps,

Pete.

Re: Limewire????

hey karrine. yea no completely,im TOTALLY out of my depth. im gonna look for someone to help me build the website, i just decided to ask a few questions on here to see how difficult it would be.

Take for example you tube. if you had something simialr, only with music not videos.

What i really want it a peer to peer application like NAPSTER but from the feedback im getting that seems very impractical. unless i could get someone to do it for me.

you dont know if there are many people able to build something as advanced as youtube do you?or is it only a few good website designers?

Re: Limewire????

As far as vBulletin is concerned you need two things.

1. A server to host your site and forum on. This server needs to be able to support MySQL databases.
2. A domain name. This can be registered fairly easily just google "domain registration".

Often these two come as a package. Such as at http://www.site5.com

Then, visit http://www.vbulletin.com/ and purchase vBulletin. Or learn PHP and build your own forum. Or pay somebody to do it for you.
