jquery, prototype, ... vs javascript

Hello there
I wanted to ask you whether it is worth or not using tools such as jquery or prototype comparing them to javascript.

What do you suggest? Using those libraries or rely just on javascript?

I knew javascript but I have got to know recently these libraries which seem to reduce the amount of code. Therefore, I do not know much about this issue. Nonetheless, if I have to give it a try, I might think that using just java script gives me more control than using those libraries. On the other hand, those libraries such as jquery or prototype might speed up the development.
Please, I would appreciate your suggestions about purposes and pros and cons of using either libraries or only javascript.

Thanks in advance

From what i have heard it depends, are you good at JS?

For people like me who are most definetly not, then these libraries are a godsend, but if you feel confident at writing your own then this can also be helpful, gives you experience and a greater understanding of what to do if it all goes wrong.

You seem worried about the libraries restricting you. You really don't have to worry, the libraries are just an extension to javascript. If theres something the libraries can't do, just do it with raw javascript.

Re: jquery, prototype, ... vs javascript

No problem, w3 schools is a great place to start off for beginners, when you are feeling more confident with your skills look at some of the libraries you get from jquery etc, see if you can understand what they are doing etc, this will help you increase your skills.
