Resize image-how to get lenght of image

Hello,
I have one site Used cars for sale.
At the minute I can crop jpg, gif images. but problem is with bmp. Does some one know script like if I got bmp image to upload, how can I crop that image using createfromimage function or any other easy way to do.
2nd question is, if I want to know lenght of image or width of image with which function I can find exact lenght of image.

As a matter of interest, if it was me, I wouldn't take bmp images anyway.
They're HUGE files which will slow down your visitors while they wait for them to download.
Even if you reduce them on the page, they will still have to wait around to download what could amount to MB's per file.

Regarding your answer, I know it is big file and i ask my users to not upload. but sometime people dont read statement and just upload. I think, good thing is to add functionality. Usually when I upload image it reduce smaller size and then store.
I also want to learn this because many people ask me to do this.
