Am I a minority?

Hi,

Just curious as to how many other women hang out at this forum. Or is this just a man's world?

Re: Am I a minority?

I'm a lady!

But I've just started here... I've seen a few posters who (to the best of my knowledge) were women. Most of them seem to be coming to the site from a design/graphics/flash point of view - I'm here to even out the balance by being a coder at heart

How did you get into website production Ruby?

Re: Am I a minority?

Cool! I'm not alone.

I've always loved computers, since about the age of 8. Over the years I have played around with personal websites using Netscape Composer & a bit of coding. However I would like to combine my hobby with work. Netscape Composer is clumsy, and so I am currently going back to basics and teaching myself HTML and CSS and the principles of good web site design (ie web standards, accessibility, etc.) The guys on here have recommened that I design my websites using just notepad to start with - so that's my goal. I have my own site to redo and am doing a website for a friend's woodcarving business for the fun of it. From that I am looking to start up my own business, helping small local businesses get on the web.

One question in my mind is the safety aspect of visiting businesses on my own - primarily if they are run from the person's home and I have no prior knowledge of them. How do you get around this?

Ruby

Re: Am I a minority?

I'm a student at the moment, but I was considering doing something similar once I graduated. I've never thought of that dilemma before! I'd probably bring along a friend who could help out on some aspect - just to be safe! Or if I couldn't I'd arrange to meet in a neutral place like a cafe or somewhere else.

I would never of thought of that if you hadn't said...

I had assumed you were male Snow. There has been a few female members, but, at a guess, it's probably about 5%. I welcome females, and it gives a valuable addition to critiques.

Here's a few pics for you too:

Re: Am I a minority?

I thought my name was very feminine! I'm quite suprised you took me for a man, and I hope no one else has - I'm girly all the way through!

You know, I'm very interested in your 'Timothy Clark Defiance II' Poster, it would go so nicely on my wall!

Re: Am I a minority?

Cheers Timmytots! What can I say, but um try putting 'rubyfruit' into Google. But I guess there's no harm in asking!

Snow - I was wondering about a cafe. Just trying to work out in my head whether I can make web page designing into a career. Distinctly fed up working for other people, and want to do something I enjoy where I'm my own boss, but which also makes enough money to keep me going.

Re: Am I a minority?

it does seem a little like we're in the minority.

Snow - for some reason i thought you were male, but i just think it was becuase nearly everyone on here is male!

I have seen a few feminine names around but looks like i might be quite wrong!!

Re: Am I a minority?

Bee_Bo at least your avatar is a good clue. It's always hard to tell just from the names - and you don't like to say just in case it offends!

Re: Am I a minority?

Hey,

I thought I'd best give everyone a pointer. I've learnt to keep my mouth shut because I've embarrassed myself before in a different forum but oh well!

Anyways, nice to meet you!!

Re: Am I a minority?

Shall we add a male/female icon in profiles?

Re: Am I a minority?

Could be an idea,

i don't mind though,

i guess it would show it's not so much a blokes world after all.

Re: Am I a minority?

I think it could be good, but only if it was somehow optional. Not everybody may be comfortable with revealing their gender, especially if they have faced discrimination before.

Re: Am I a minority?

obviously, this would be an issue.

being able to hide it would also help out those who haven't decided yet
