Hi Folks. I have a problem!!

Hi All. I'm Ian. I'm a relative novice to web site development. My problem is that when I update one of the pages on my website and FTP the updated page to my webspace, I can't view the updated page for a day or two. However, if I view it from another PC, I can see the updated page straight away. Also, if I delete a page, I can still view it afterwards. I've tried clearing the cache, cookies, browsing history but it makes no difference. Please can somebody explain what I'm missing here.

Re: Hi Folks. I have a problem!!

If you can view it okay from another p.c. the page has obviously been updated on your host's server.
It must be stuck in your cache somehow or you'd be able to see the same on both pc's.

Welcome to WebForumz, btw.

Re: Hi Folks. I have a problem!!

Thanks RedSkwirrell and sypher for the reply. I figured that my laptop was holding on to the old page despite me clearing the cache. I have just tried ctrl+f5 but I still see the old page. I assume that my webspace holds the latest version of the page but I can't be sure as I've yet to check the latest update from another PC. However, when I view the page locally, the updated page appears as it should and I don't usually have trouble uploading pages via FTP. Therefore, I've no reason to believe that the updated version isn't there.

When you say 'view the page locally', I'm not sure you actually mean that.
It would imply you're viewing the page on the machine you used to create it from the files you use to upload.
So you'd be viewing the files on your machine rather than your webspace.

Re: Hi Folks. I have a problem!!

I mainly use FF but IE also shows the old page. When I say 'view the page locally', I mean that when I open the HTML file that I have saved on my machine, I see the updated version. However, when I view that page via the web, I see the old one even though I've definitely uploaded the latest version to the web space.

Re: Hi Folks. I have a problem!!

Okay, disregard the local one.
You will always see the last saved version on your machine.
This is an instant change so you will see it the instant you change it.

However it can take a little while for the change to happen over the web because you have to upload the file to your host's servers and then have it fed back to your machine (or anyone viewing the page's machine) again.
This should also be instant but isn't and there are a number of factors which may affect it.
It could be a delay in your host updating your space, it could be a delay in your machine accepting the updated info back from your own site (remembering that the file on your own machine is a separate and independent file from the one on your webspace, only sharing a relationship through being a copy of it, in some form or other).

I have suffered delays of several hours with the host of my own web site (ntl) on occasions. It's very frustrating, but usually it's an instant transition and complaining to ntl takes more effort than living with it. Sign of todays times I'm afraid.

Re: Hi Folks. I have a problem!!

So it's quite normal for there to be a delay? It's just annoying when I know the updated page is there (and can see it when I use my PC at work) but have to wait to see it at home. It makes checking that everything is ok after an update difficult.

I suppose it doesn't help that I'm currently using the free space that comes with my Tesco broadband account. I doubt they put much effort into their free webspace!! I'm currently looking to purchase new hosting as I want more space etc so maybe my problem may disappear with a new host.

Thanks for your replys RedSkwirrell and sypher. I'll still be interested to read any other thoughts that you or anyone else may have on this subject.
