Hi Everyone!
I am excited to be here.. I've been out of the web design arena for a while and am working on returning.
WHAT I AM ASKING FOR HELP RELATING I wish to receive advice from web designers/developers on the following: I know html,xhtml,css a little javascript and a little xml, sql also. I learned asp in college, c++ but I've never used it. I am interested in becoming more of a web developer instead of a designer. I want to ultimately create web services. But I am unsure what languages I should focus on learning/improving my skills. For example should I focus on open source or microsoft? I am currently a database anaylst.. so should I start with sql (sqlserver/my sql) and improve those skills. Should I improve my javascript skills learn xml then ajax? Or SOAP? As you can see, I need help.. I viewed some job postings but am still unsure what skills are most essential to have right now vs. ones that are not. Also, other than showing proof of my skills, do I need certifications? I know this is a long one, but I finally know the path I want to take, just need guidance.. So any kind souls opinions welcome.. Welcome! Some little advice,
I here microsoft developers can get a lot of work. If have a look around the job opps section, you'll see a lot of people asking for ASP and ASP.NET work.

As for your question ... it depends on where you want to go with this. If you want to own your own company, then I would say start learning Ruby, Ajax, PHP and MySQL. Some companies are looking for these skills as well but alot more want .NET with Oracle skills. hth
