Smile Hello!

I know very little about websites - I've registered, hand coded, and been the webmaster for them (setting up pop accounts, etc.), but I've never done anything advanced. I've always used very little javascript and CSS in my designs, though I need to change that now.

I am friends with someone that knows quite a bit more about technology than me - he knows several computer languages, has his own hosting business, has coded software for companies before, and runs a basic/private computer building/support business. We have been friends for a long time, but I moved away a few years ago. One way we thought it would be nice to stay in touch, was to create a website together. But, well, nothing really ever came of that (actually, we put a lot of work in and then discovered that what we wanted to do was already done - it was essentially a combination of del.icio.us, stickis, and a chatroom-like thing [defined by the root URL but you would leave a trail as you went from page to page.])

So we sort of gave-up on that and lost touch. BUT THEN, while I was trying to find cool domains (more of a hobby than anything), I snatched-up a pretty awesome domain name - it would be perfect for something that I always wanted to do. And it's something really important too. So now we are back at it, and I am responsible for the design end of things. He is going to do all the PHP and fancy stuff, but he is not big on design at all. So, now I am confronted with what is by far my biggest design challenge, and since we want our website to be good I figured that I had better do it right. Thus I need to start asking questions. Thus, I need to be a part of a community that can answer them!

This is my introduction, and I'm hoping that you all can help! I am a fulltime Psychology and Philosophy student, and my friend is doing Pre-Med. I hope to be a productive member of the community, and I hope that this community will be able to help me out.

Thanks for reading my introduction.

Re: Hello!

Hey welcome Karl! Nice introduction. Despite saying you know very little about websites, it sounds like you know quite a bit...certainly enough for us to let you in anyway I'll be interested to hear more about your project when you're ready to reveal!

Re: Hello!

I didn't know that there was a minimum knowledge requirement! I promise that I read through the rules though... I must have simply missed that.

But thank you for the warm and non-generic welcome. It is much appreciated!

Re: Hello!

Don't worry, the minimum knowledge requirement is very low - in fact being able to register for the forum just about covers it!

Glad you appreciated the non-generic welcome, I aim to please

Re: Hello!

Vanessa - I have a few questions that aren't directly related to my project, and I'm not sure where to post them or even if they are allowed.

One is to critique a logo I made, and is a question about using the web browser to do something altogether unrelated to websites (it relates to my research internship.) Should I simply post these questions in the most appropriate forum I can find, and then risk deletion? Should I write them up more in depth here? Would I get in trouble if they were slightly off topic? How rigid are the moderators of these forums?

Re: Hello!

Ok, well for a critique of a logo I would post in the graphics forum - don't quite understand how it relates to using the browser for something unrelated to websites, but if your question doesn't seem to fit any of the forum areas, then just post it in the cafe, pretty much anything is allowed there (within the bounds of law and decency!) - people post things in there completely unrelated to websites, so it should be fine in there. You'll only really get in trouble with the mods if you're insulting to people or if you try and advertise, otherwise they're pretty easygoing

I wouldn't post specific questions into this thread though because a lot of people don't venture into the introduction area, so you'll get more answers elsewhere.

Hope this helps!

Oh!, the moderators here will move your post to the correct forum if you have posted in the incorrect one. I would have to say that this is one of the best forums that I have registered with that don't delete your post if it is in the wrong forum.
