A Technoklutz Moving Ahead

I am more of a philosopher than a technician but necessity has had me doing cut and paste programming for many years. I am now attempting to push my knowledge ahead to be able to re-invent myself and my web use to stay in step with the changing world and financial needs.
If there is anyone else out there over 60 years of age that would like to compare notes, I am interested. My wife and I have operated our own business for thirty plus years and it has, with the help of the Internet and a web site built mostly by a great programmer, been a virtual business for the past three years.

I guess this is a way of regaining that innocent (aka stupid) feeling we all must have had at age three or so. I have been exploring digital communication since the early eighties when I bought an Apple II+ for my daughters and they only played games on it. I have tried to to get into forums for years and find them totally non-intuitive. I have been patient enough to learn to fly airplanes, travel worldwide and do a lot of things but dealing with programming realy strains my ability to wander aimlessly hoping to learn something useful. Am I the only one that it seems that way too?

I have been reading various items at random since there does not seem to be a real logical progresssion, and I see I am supposed to respond to comments by greeters and build on them. This is a response for that purpose and to possibly find someone I can ask questions. Posting a question to the world might work but, frankly, I am still unable to tell what and who I am posting to most of the time.

I looked at your (sannbe) profile and see you were relatively new in 2006 and apparently know your way around now. There may be hope, I hope. While I would love to be able to ask some of the 25 and younger members questions, I fear we don't speak much of the same language.

I clicked on quote because I couldn't see a place where it said "Post a reply to this comment". I now do not know if I am posting to the whole world, some samll group or only sannbe. I have no idea what "send trackback is talking about. Should I?

I don't speak "icon" but, what the heck, in an effort to show I am friendly and humble I picked the closest one to my "Alfred E Newman" feeling.

Question Re: A Technoklutz Moving Ahead

How does one know what or who a reply is being posted to? I do not know if I am replying to myself or to anyone else who resonded to my original thread. When I post a query in a forum, am I correct that I have to later find my way back to that same place in that same forum in order to see if anyone respnded? Are responses ever sent to the email address of the person who posted?

Re: A Technoklutz Moving Ahead

Don't be despondent Gringolalo! It doesn't take long to find your way around this forum and learn the ropes. You did the right thing clicking Quote in order to respond to a specific response within the forum. Believe me, at 36 I feel like a bit of an oldie compared to some on here! You might feel like the under 25s don't speak the same language, but give them a chance, you might be surprised.

In terms of email, I always receive an email to let me know when anyone has posted anything in a thread I'm subscribed to (that is a thread that either I started, or I have posted a message in) - I can't remember if that's automatic, or if that's an option I chose when I joined.

When logging on, try clicking on 'Get New Posts' at the top, this will show you all threads where new posts have been added since the last time you logged on. I find this a better option than trawling through all the individual forums trying to find something I want to read.

Hope this helps a bit!
