new kid on the block

well I can honestly say I never thought I would be joining a web forum. I am currently stumbling my way through teaching myself dreamweaver 8 and enjoying the many bumps along the way. I have extremely limited web knowledge but a hell of a lot of determination! I am building myself a new website at the moment, my current website which is quite a mess will then be the next job on my list for a rebuild. to show my ignorance i don't even know which section to post my questions in 1) can someone explain to me in simple terms what a cgi wrapper is? 2)I'm currently working on building a form for wholesale purposes, is formmail-clone a favourable program to attach it to? If you can steer me in the right direction to which section of the forum I should direct these questions to, I would be thankful.
It looks a great forum here, am looking forward to being part of it.
Many thanks,
Lorraine

Welcome to the forumz! You've come to the right place to get help. I have no idea what a CGI wrapper is... About the form-mail, I'd say you're looking for a nice PHP script to handle some extra stuff. I'd stay away from CGI.

Welcome to the forums!

If it is a contact form your looking for (which is what cgi always used to be used for) then go for a php one. Karinne knows of really good one but I can't remember the url. Perhaps she'll post up a link. Karinne?

Re: new kid on the block

Hi, thanks for making me feel welcome. The form I am about to attempt is a wholesale registration form which I am hoping to gather the info into an email sent to my address. I will also need to set up a user/password form. I have no knowledge of scripts so yes this will make you all cringe I will be using the design mode in dreamweaver. :-)

Re: new kid on the block

hahaha...Well this is going to be complicated for a beginner, but not impossible! Let's start by saying..."for any type of form, if you are on a server that supports PHP...use PHP!" Same goes for the username/password form.

But this is where matters get complicated. You would then connect the PHP form to a MySQL database, which is kinda like an Excel worksheet. It stores and encrypts the data there. (Normally MD5 encryption ) I would start out by posting in the New to Web Design area I am sure they will get you going on the right path! Also check out the Beginner Resources area!

Oh yeah, Welcome to Webforumz!

Welcome to the forumz!

Here's the form - PHP Contact Script

And if you do a search of the forum for php contact script or something similar, you should find quite a few threads on the subject!

I agree with Ryan. Cgi stuff is a nightmare to work with, and as far as I know hasnt changed or been updated in many years. PHP is the way to go in my opinion.

for example, in php you can basicaly send an email simply with:

mail("to@youraddress.com","Subject","Message");

There is more to it than that really, but that would send. When I have had to do stuff with Cgi its always been bad and theres been loads of code.
