validation, validation, validation

Hello to everyone. I live in SW France near the Pyrenees where I have a guest house. I have built a website and switched over to CSS last year. I joined this forum as I have discovered that my site doesn't look so good in Firefox - I get overlapping divs.

Before posting I read through the CSS forum to see if the question had already come up. I found a reply from ukgeoff to someone with a problem and he said "the first thing I want you to do is to validate". Oops, perhaps I should do that. What a mess!! I spent most of Sunday fixing HTML code, nearly finished, then it's onto the CSS.

Am I the only fool in the world who hasn't validated? It hasn't fixed my problem yet but I wonder how my site ran at all with all the errors in the HTML. Do you make a point of telling people to validate? It's the most fun I've had legally for a long time and I can strongly recommend it.

Bye for now.

Re: validation, validation, validation

Sadly, validation isn't very widely done. Even our friend Google doesn't take the time to make their own site validate. I do highly recommend it because validation can fix quite a few visual problems.

For getting your site to work with CSS, I recommend getting the site to work in Firefox or Safari first. As FF and Safari generally support CSS better than IE does, it's easier fixing a site for IE than the other way around.

Re: validation, validation, validation

Although it is important to bear in mind that validation, though an important step, does not mean that the site will be more accesible or usable than a non validating site. Table based layout's validate, this doesn't mean we should use them.

Seperation of content from presentation, semantic markup, visual aids (text size, contrasting colours) and other accessibility features (such as access keys and the like) are just as important. At times a site will not validate for various reasons, often coders can get hung up on validation while neglecting the issue that validaton is trying to address.

That said first thing you should do with new sites is validate them. Then if something needs to stay which isn't validating then as long as it isn't compromising the usability of the site then leave it in.

Sorry if I've confused you at all, but it is an important point.

Pete.

Re: validation, validation, validation

Hi everyone, yes I'm still here following all this.

pete, on line 1 did you mean to say ".....does not mean that the site...." ??

dan, thank you for your kind words but there is no need to speak French to me, I speak a leetle eenglish and please to keep your rabbits off my lawn.

karrine, more kind words thank you, but actually I'm English. Your resource list will keep me out of trouble for a while.

ryan, now you tell me! I worked only with IE for years. I have recently switched to FF, which I prefer. I am currently working on a new site and will keep your advice in mind tho' it ain't easy.
