Hello everyone......
Hi everyone,
I took Web Design in school last year, and was very disappointed in how little the instructors knew or at the very least, were willing to communicate with the students. To call me a newbie would be quite a compliment. I know less than nothing regarding web design. I want to know a lot. I am a good listener and I promise not to waste anyone’s time. I build custom computers for a living, but my kids have to set my watch. I have wanted a website for years now, and have made a few feeble attempts, all for naught. So I have come for help. I want to put a simple 3 to 4 page website together w/ maybe some flash and graphics. I am a good artist. I've got Photoshop 7, Illustrator 10, Golive 6 and have access to DW at school. Be patient with me and if I can help anyone with technical computer questions, feel free. |

Welcome to Webforumz!
You can't be that much of a newbie if you thought that the instructors knew very little! |

Oh, I am a newbie all right. I would like to start to develop a website and maybe a forum in the future. I would like to start with GoLive, DW or FrontPage. I will take your lead as to which.
I don’t even know where to make my first post. I have looked to many forums and I sort of felt at home here. |

I, and I think most everyone here, will recommend DW out of that list. And those that don't would probably say Notepad.

Yes, 'which editor to use' has always been a hot debate on Webforumz!
Most people want complete control over their code and if they use a WYSIWYG editor then it needs to produce simple, efficient code. I would say that Dreamweaver is the best out there for that. It produces fairly efficient code, but do NOT use it for CSS. Instead add in your CSS by hand. I personally use Dreamweaver to do any complicated HTML. I usually use the WYSIWYG to create something that looks like what I want to use, then I head into the code and strip out parts I don't want. Usually, there isn't much that needs to be taken out. Some people obviously don't like the code that Dreamweaver produces at all, so they do their own code from scratch in notepad. However I would even then suggest that you find a notepad alternative, with more than one layer of undo for ease of use. A good alternative is 'metapad'. |

I personally wouls say this: (I think most others would agree)
It is ok using dreamweaver, go live and frontpage or whatever else you want to. For the purposes of my argument it doesnt really matter which. However, I would strongly recommend learning (X)HTML and CSS yourself using notepad. If you casn completely understand HTML and CSS then I would say you are in a position to use a WYSIWYG editor. Essentially, you need to know exactly what your editor is up to. You should be able to look at the code it produces and know exactly what it is all doing. If something goes wrong you can then fix it. If you are resigned to never really know HTML or CSS, then by all means dive right in and use a WYSIWYG editor. If however you really wanna know HTML inside out for tasks other than your own website (you may wanna do other peoples), then buy a good book, or learn from one of the free tutor sites such as W3Schools, or webmonkey (google for these) Hope this info helps you take the right path for you.
