g'mornin' everyone!

Well kids....it's been YEARS since i've dabbled in the relm of web design. Now, I find myself thrown into the deep end of the pool.

So, my first question is: since there are soo many design programs out there, knowing HTML etc as raw code is pretty un-necessary--yes? No?

And, if that is in fact the case-and since the only web site that I currently need to maintain is one that is up and fuctional (albeit, rather crude); where do I start? (This is an adult content site; so I will not be posting it here for critique).

Any suggestions??

My first thought is to get the site's password for the FTP and download the content; as the previous webmaster left in a hurry..and now the site is rather rogue. After that, I can certainly change some of the text, etc. that the owner wants changed very easily with pretty much any WYSIWYG...beyond that, I'm at a loss. He would also like to add a shopping cart and integrate it into his current CC processor.......

Thanks everyone!!
CJ

If you're serious about designing websites, learn to code by hand. XHTML and CSS are the two modern languages that you should be coding in. Tables are no longer necessary or good If you're just looking for a quick fix, there are programs out there like Dreamweaver that can get you a decent website.

Cool Re: g'mornin' everyone!

Thank u, thank u to everyone for the welcome.

I guess the next think for me to do is to go snooping around the site and see what's available.

Apparenlty, the site that I'm now charged with maintaining was first created with DreamWeaver. Now; I have pulled all of the pics, etc off of it with simple right-click n saves. Pulled the text, etc (as the old webmaster will not give up the site password to get to the FTP site). With this, I have made a very quicky temp site with a web-based template on a free server just to get the content up somewhere. The only bad thing about that is that the 'work' is gone when the site goes to a different server (it will eventually be served from two different and --purposfully--disconnected servers : Sultryserver, which is a free server and another offshore server. Both of which currently have the rogue material.)

The owner is very concerned--as are all--about speed of page load. So, the site as it is now is VERY ugly and unprofessional. I'm trying to convince him that the site CAN look very pro AND be fast..however, it's tough since his old webmaster insisted that she was totally expert and that the way she did his site was as fast as it wouold run (oh, the coding is ugly!!).

If anyone would like to see what i'm working with, I will send the address via PM: as I said, it's adult content and I don't want to just post it up her in an open forum.

Now....off to learn some coding!!

Haha. I've come across way to many day job web designers that charge a huge amount of money (2-3k) for a site that I could make in 30 minutes, and not only that, actually make it SE friendly, validated and table-free.
