Hi
i've created a test page, which i am currently hosting within my own website. the link is http://www.n-design.eu/test/index2.html. BUT!! the menu rollover links don't work!! I just can't figure out why!. It is an image rollover that doesn't roll over!! The HTML for the link (first one, home button) is: <td><a href="index.html" onmouseout="MM_swapImgRestore()" onmouseover="MM_swapImage('Image6','','images/menu2/home2.png',1)"><img src="images/menu2/home1.png" alt="Home" width="100" height="25" border="0" /></a></td> I've compared it to another site i built where the rollover links worked, and the HTML is exaxtly the same, so i would be grateful for any advice as to why it won't roll over! Thanks, Nova |

Re: Rollover image links - eek...why aren't they working??
Hmm, sounds like a Dreamweaver auto-generated code! Here's what I say. FORGET IT!!! That sort of code requires javascript! And what's worse, it's in a table! Yuck! No offense but this is a terrible way to make navigation. What you should use is CSS with a <ul>. It's much easier! Look at this tutorial for starters... If you have problems, I'll be glad to help.
Cheers,

uh, do you have your images linked to the page you want them to go to?

Oh, one more thing: HOLY CRAP! You have 125 validation errors! Take a look. Those need to be fixed...

Re: Rollover image links - eek...why aren't they working??
it was created in dreamweaver, but about 80% of websites are created in DW, so there's no need to assume it will automatically be wrong. here is another site i created (in DW) the day before where the links do work, and the code is exactly the same..
http://www.n-design.eu/abactive/index.html RE: the second message, the rollover images are linked to the page i want them to go to, although most of the pages are not actually created yet. that doesn't seem to matter though - i have tested it by adding the original index page to the test folder and the home button still doesn't work. see this, though the majority of files have not been copied over.... http://www.n-design.eu/test/index.html would still appeciate some advice!! |

Re: Rollover image links - eek...why aren't they working??
OK, what browser are you using? If you happen to be using Firefox, use Tools>Options>Content (Globe), and uncheck "Enable JavaScript". Now, go to http://www.n-design.eu/test/index.html (the second link you posted), and see what your menu does. Nothing! So, what if someone with JavaScript disabled comes to your site and thinks 'Why don't the menu work?'. That's why css is much better.

Quote:
That's invalid, also known as wrong. This is not a matter of taste or judgement; if your code is invalid, then it's simply wrong. To cope with all this crud, browsers have sophisticated error-correcting routines, which in the absence of valid code attempt to guess what the author intended. Nevertheless, they often guess incorrectly. Moreover, different browsers, and new versions of old browsers, make different guesses. The most effective way to ensure consistent and stable results across browsers is to write valid code. With valid code, browsers do not need to guess what you meant. Admittedly IE6 will still be a problem, requiring special attention; IE7 less so. Last edited by MikeHopley; Nov 15th, 2007 at 08:35. |

Loose the JS ... you don't need it.
We have a great tutorial on this subject in the Creative Coding Newsletter - CSS Hover Effects |
