Html Colour box backgrounds

Hi all.
Just looking for the right html to create boxes ( like a background for specific areas of the page ) of varying sizes to create distinct areas.
eg. http://www.bbc.co.uk/
Would like to use variety of colours and maybe sometimes add a border.
Struggling to find right code.

Hi tried this - but it also has a table woven into it and don't know which bits to lose to make it work.

i think he wants it tighter together. you gotta work on your cellpadding and cell spaceing. Also if you want it like the bbc page you wanna use css. thats what they use. you can learn it in a week so get on it. go to https://www.w3schools.com you'll learn everything you'll ever need. and once you learn it you only have to use the code one per area.

All I'm trying to get is a coloured box on which I can place whatever picx/text.
I'd like to be able to accurately control the size, colour & border. Maybe use a few in one page to seperate areas.

Is there a shortcut to this or do I need to do CSS as Daygon suggests?

But using tables is not recommended. It's yesterdays way of handling web design.
