html cant edit

hey guys after reinstalling i noticed that i could not edit my html pages due to this problem here.

what happens is that for instance if i create an html file on my desktop-it automatically makes a replica of the html file i have on desktop to the internet temporary folder and treates that html i created on my desktop as an internet temporary file.

so if i try to edit that file on desktop no actions will be taken since its an internet "Temporary File" am editing.

is there any solutions to that problem.am sounding calm but my inside is already eaten out teribly.

thanks anyway

What was it you reinstalled, Windows? Also, what are you using to edit your HTML pages?

Dude...

It seriously sounds like what you have on your desktop is a shortcut... and you are trying to edit the shortcut file.

If this is not the case, then this would be the weirdest thing I have seen!!

I was coding HTML on napkins and stuff when I was 10 years of age, cause we didnt have a computer to do them on. I have just recently picked up webdesign/Flash design.

I've got a few ideas on what might be causing it, but first, when you say <blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="geneva, verdana, arial" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">no actions will be taken since its an internet "Temporary File" am editing<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote"> do you mean you can't save the file or something else?

And when you go to edit the file are you actually opening the file with Notepad or are you editing the source from IE with Notepad set as your default editor?

I think what you are dealing with is a virus. What I think you should do is to do a virus scan in MSDOS and verify if there is a virus playing a trick on you. If the scan doesn't detect anything, call up Symantec/McAfee and do what they say. You may have to zip up your HDD in a antistatic package to send it to the virologists.

Who knows! It could be a new variant of the Fujian virus? Moscow virus?

Yeah TTVersion, can you tell us:
1 - what you're using to edit the file
2 - that the file is a valid .html or .htm file and it's on your desktop?
3 - I assume that IE is showing you the same page despite you editing the file on your desktop in notepad? Is that right?
4 - Is your editor able to save the file or does it give an error when you go file>save ?
5 - Have you tried another browser, such as Opera, Netscape, etc? Then we will be sure that IE is the problem, as opposed to windows.

Can you explicitly answer all 5 questions pls!!

i just noticed all of a sudden right clicking on the html and opening it notpad works just fine which was not working before but only if i view the source by opening the html document right clicking then view source.
lol and yes the file is a valid html/htm file

and yes IE is showing me the same file without the extra code i placed it in since its like a temporary internet file.

and for the last time i said the html on desktop as an example-it dont matter where i make the html/htm file its the same ****.

and lets say i make an html on desktop then i view source then edit it-as an example so you can understand-i just click the close button and it will ask if i want to save teh file yes-no or cancle-and that message dialog box which shows yes-no-cancle points the file am editing to the internet temporay files "c:/documents and settings/local settings/internet temp files/desktop.htm"

thats how it is.dont know what the hell is happeining and yes i did upgrade my antivirus assuming some virus messing with me but it found absolutely nothing.

and no i havent tried any other brower apart from going back to IE 5.5 and it is the same as IE 6.0.

You need to scan your PC from DOS. If you scan within windows, then the virus may have altered your system and your antivirus software to render it unusable. I would also suggest looking at Catalyst's links. They bear some similarity to your problem. One of them's not working but http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1246/ may bear the answer
