frames linking issues
I have a site up and running.. www.pointclicktravel.com
It has a frames page with a header frame and a main frame. I have some files at my site, and others link thru an affiliate and load in the main frame. I have my default hyperlinks for the main frame set to the same frame.... the problem I have is that when a page from outside of my site loads in the main frame, it has a home link on it.. when a user clicks the home link, it loads my index.html file in the main frame...under the header..making 2 headers appear... to replicate this, go to www.pointclicktravel.com, click hotel search, then the home link that appears below the hotel search button...... if other links are clicked on the hotel search page, they load in the main frame, which is what I want to happen... it is the home link that is a problem...that loads in the main frame as well I'd like to reload the entire site instead of the site in the lower frame when only the home link is clicked Any way to do this without being able to edit/control the link page at the affiliates site?? Thanks - AB |

You can use javascript on the home page to check for being opened inside frames. If it is then it can reload itself in the full window. The only real problem with this is that the home page has to load twice when people get to it inside the frameset.
BUT I would say without a doubt, redesign the site to not use frames (not just cause of this issue). |

Why frames are evil
I have to agree with Catalyst here. Your site is excellent except for the frames. In Opera it's quite bad - The top frame is scrollable and your navigation is not even visible unless that top frme is scrolled! |

Thanks for the responses.. I can fix the scrolling, and frames are a bit necessary... Can anyone provide javascript to reload the page if it is loaded in the bottom frame..

Frames are almost never necessary, so if you tell why you think you need them I can tell you how to design it better. I can't say strongly enough that for a professional, usable site you should avoid them. Your site will not print well and you will do poorly on search engines among many other problems...
But if you're set on it here's the script http://developer.irt.org/script/206.htm |

well.. I dont agree with Frames being necessary.. unless you want your navbar to be viewable on top when your visitor goes to another site. This is the only use I can see with frames.. and this is EXTREMELY anoying. But hey, We all have our loves, and if yours is frames.. I am all behind ya!

In my opinion, your site does NOT need frames. Nowadays, many problems with frames have been sorted out, with almost all browsers supporting frames and showing them accurately and nicely.
Nonetheless, many limitations, quirks and aesthestics of frames can never be altered or improved on. To be honest, frames are no longer used for such a purpose ( your navbar) and are not in the least required in your case. In fact, it makes your design worse. As you can see, none of us are fans of frames! |

Hey, its like my momma Said, "Frames are for photographs and are made to be hung on a wall. So what are they doing on my computer?". Thats what my momma says

She will hollar up at me and say, Turn it back to the way it was, I dont like the new pictures. She still doesnt get that the internet is not just a program on your computer.. Ohh well, we aren't all sposed to be cyber geeks
