New fresh meat - need help doing gallery thumbnails

This is almost identical to what my page looks like. If I wanted individuals to click on either the arrows at the bottom or numbers what would I need to do that would refresh the thumbnails? Also on the links to the left would I have to copy the page for each gallery category or can I just refresh the gallery thumbnail views to reflect which category? I have a feeling this is javascriping which I have never done before. Below is the code for the above template. I envy all you talented web programmers.

Re: New fresh meat - need help doing gallery thumbnails

I think I began by editing the template all wrong. From what I understand I don't have to edit all the gif and jpg images I just have to edit the source psd photoshop files and update them in slices. But that leaves me in the unknown territory. I have not done this with photoshop cs 9 before. I primarily use it only for picture editing. Any insite would be greatly appreciated.

This is most likely PHP with MySQL. And you're in luck, it's easy to learn! I suggest you visit http://hotscripts.com/ and searching for a simple gallery script.

Re: New fresh meat - need help doing gallery thumbnails

Frieworks is much better suited for this task imo. While photoshop is the bestest at many things (I have CS 2) even with my years of doing photo restorations etc.. I find Fireworks to be THE BEST for web comps, design, and icon/logo creation. But thats me. Also slicing things up in Fireworks is just uber nice the way it all works. FW is a web designing app, PS is not imo. Now if you are talking general design, dtp etc.. Photoshop all the way.

Re: New fresh meat - need help doing gallery thumbnails

So which is the easiest? I noticed editing in photoshop that the template has two pictures via layer but I have no clue what to do. Any suggestion on what you would suggest a new user to do? Man I thought buying a web template would make things easier. It was suggested to use Photoshop and update slices which I have done. So what would be the easiest way to have different sized pictures resized to the same size thumbnails. I appreciate all the help and which way do you recommend I use to have thumbnails refreshed then?

Re: New fresh meat - need help doing gallery thumbnails

I have fireworks, dreamweaver and flash mx 2004. You suggest fireworks?
I don't want to use javascipt if possible. Being a noob that is what the site I purchased the template suggested using via array function. So today, (God I hope it helps) I purchased 100 bucks worth of books for Dreamweaver 8 basic and advanced functions.

JavaScript is good. Just make sure it degrades gracefully if it's not enabled.

Re: New fresh meat - need help doing gallery thumbnails

I would love to do it in java but I have never done this before. I need MAJOR help if it is Java. Below is the code example they gave for a gallery.

http://info.template-help.com/after_.../article3.html

and this

http://info.template-help.com/after_.../article4.html

I am not going to lie, I feel overwhelmed, frustrated and ignorant . I am very good about learning things but figuring out how do to damn thumbnail gallery that maintains the same position for a 3 x 3 array is daunting. How much would any of you charge to walk me through this? I spend two hours looking through Flash MX, Dreamweaver, CSS/HTML, JAVA and many other books only to realize that I'm not sure which ones would help me with this!

Re: New fresh meat - need help doing gallery thumbnails

Java and JavaScript are two different things. You're going to have to use XHTML, CSS and JavaScript in different quantaties to get this thing to work. Creating thumbnail galleries is no easy task

Looking for a premade one that suits you best is by far the simplest way to get something done.

Re: New fresh meat - need help doing gallery thumbnails

Project Seven has an image gallery that works with Dreamweaver. You might find that you can work with this easier and they have a forum to help you and tech support. http://www.projectseven.com/products...agic/index.htm

Hope this helps!

Re: New fresh meat - need help doing gallery thumbnails

Man I really am getting frustrated. Template-help.com told me the price to implement php script for the web gallery. The good news is that I found what code to use. The bad news is that I cannot afford what they are asking, nor do I have even one damn book on PHP scripting.

Re: New fresh meat - need help doing gallery thumbnails

ok... instead of going out and buying books, just take some tutorials. There are even some interactive tutorials to keep you awake. Trust me i know how it is to not know something and have to read up on it. Reading to me is boreing. Fire works is the best especially if you're a noob. it writes all the java up for you and all you have to do is just fill in the fields and the linking right then its gravy from there. When i wanna do simple drop down menus i use fire works and im somewhat and expert designer. Now until i learn how to do drop downs in css it is what i will use.

Re: New fresh meat - need help doing gallery thumbnails

Doing a gallery with CSS is not only possible it is also very practical. What it boils down to is how automated you want the process to be. PHP could easily create your thumbnails and used with a database you then have your auto gallery generation while using CSS/xhtml for the output. I personally automate myimage galleries using textpatterns built in stuff but thats me.
