Web Design Using Tables
Hi Folks, Wanted to get your opinion. I've been lurking and contributing here for about a month or so now and have been very interested in the subject of tableless designs and using css instead.
It's something that I'm working on learning and think it's an excellent skill to know. However, why is it so important to be tableless when sites such as www.ebay.com www.amazon.com www.pamelaanderson.com www.microsoft.com have not changed their sites? They are all using tables. Since seeing all of the above sites created with tables, I feel it is less important to use css? If making the sites W3C compliant is so important, why wouldn't the most popular sites on the web be following? Yes I know that tables are for tabulated data, but obviously no one told Microsoft that? Looking forward to your opinions. After seeing so many major sites using tables, I'm thinking css is NOT as important as you all make it seem. Now don't throw me to the wolves..... educate me! |

Re: Web Design Using Tables
These big sites date back quite a long time and it'll take them time to catch up.
Just because some existing sites are table based doesn't mean future versions will be. I'd never go back to laying things out with tables, there are too many disadvantages. Amazon has quite a bit of CSS in there anyway, its a bit of a mish mash. Last edited by drd; Nov 29th, 2006 at 14:12. |

Re: Web Design Using Tables
this is very true..... can u imagine the effort... not to mention money required to transform ebay and amazon to a pure CSS layout...
It will tajke a looong time.......... but seriously.... stick with CSS .... you should get a warm feeling knowing that your site is "better" (in a way) than amazon .... |

Re: Web Design Using Tables
Chances are they have a tableless layout in works but yeah it takes a bit of effort, QC and testing before they can go live with it.

Besides, just because they're big companies, it doesn't mean they do everything right!
