how to point to nameservers?

First off, I would just like to say thankyou to Jack for helping with the domain and hosting help.

Right i can't remember if it was thursday or friday that the domain and hosting was purchased but when i go to my website now, it just says that its parked free by godaddy and i cant get to the cpanel yet, but i have had a series of emails and the latest one says, what does the following bit mean and how do i do it? how much longer will it take for everything to be up and running and being able to get to the cpanel, cant wait.

If you have ordered a domain name, this is currently being registered and should be active within the next 24 hours.

Alternatively your domain name must point at the following nameservers to work on this hosting account.

Re: how to point to nameservers?

If you registered your domain and hosting from the same site / company, then you don't need to worry about nameservers. These are just if you have hosting elsewhere, and need to point the domain in that direction.

Just sit tight and wait for everything to go through (max 24 hours like you say). If it's still not working by then, start bugging your host!

Hi Stormraven.

1) You need to log in to GoDaddy (They will have sent you an account number in one of the emails) and you will have a password.
2) Find your way to 'My Account' and click on 'Manage Domains'
3) There will be a bar at the top of your screen, with lots of options. One of them should say 'Change DNS' (I think, or it might be 'Change Nameservers')
4) Click on the button, and add your custom nameservers in.

On the default nameservers tab i have set it to custom, in the email i got, i got 4 name servers to change, when i go to the page to put them in the boxes, i delete the two ones that are already in the boxes and put the ones i got in the email into the box, press save, log out, back in again, look at the namservers page and the two default ones are back in there again, and the ones i entered have dissapeared

When the name server things work, will everything be up and running then? its been 3 days now. and i still cant get to the cpanel

Sounds like you need to get on to godaddy pronto if their web site is not accepting your name servers. Ask them to help you, just in case you "might" have missed something.

Cheers mate, I emailed godaddy and they sent me an email back, funnyily enough they told me to do everything i had already But when i got the email from dream-hosting they gave me something to put in the boxes, it gives me something to put in the box, but it also includes and IP address, its .................com and then at the end of the .com its got an IP address, all four of them have IP numbers at the end. When I got the reply from godaddy support people it said 'please make sure that you are using the exact instructions below and please note that you do not need to enter the IP addresses stated.' But im not sure if im supposed to leave them there or take them out, dreamhosting said i should put them in the box and godaddy says take the IP address out lol.

The IP's are FYI only, godaddy are correct, not dreamhost.
Geeze, you would think the hosting company would know that wouldnt you?

Not all registrar's need the IP addresses of the name servers as they are good enough to figure it out for themselves, but some registrar's do ask for the IP's if they also set GLUE records too, but godaddy doesnt need them.

Hold on, why am I correcting your own hosting company?
Anybody see something wrong with this picture? Dreamhost take his money, and we provide the support

Thankyou for your help mate.

Maybe choose wesh next time ey

Two of the boxes on the nameservers page have asteriks by them, but only two and i had 4 NS in the email. I put them in the box, all four, without the IP's, press ok. Log out and then back in again, and the ones i entered still dont stay there, only the default ones still appear in the box, both the default ones

Just use as many name servers as godaddy will allow. If its a problem, give godaddy your name servers and ask them to set it up for you.

I tell you what I'll do, as I'm feeling generous today helping 20 people on different forums.
PM me your godaddy login details, and the name servers given in your welcome email and I'll sort it out for you.

Re: how to point to nameservers?

Apologies for the delay in helping with that, the wife had dinner on the table :-)

Just out of interest, are you with Dream-hosting.co.uk or Dreamhost.com, both are different companies?

dream-hosting.co.uk are using the cpanel proxy which prevents people on mobile broadband logging in properly it would seem.

Also, their web site is hosted in the states, and he cant find a phone number for anybody to help as it seems to be email only.

I've sorted his DNS and he now has hosting with us
