bandwidth help

just wondering: on average, how many visitors/transfers can I get with 1200 gb bandwidth? I am looking to open a site and need to know how much bandwidth I might need before deciding on a host. Thanks and later then.

Re: bandwidth help

1200 GB is a lot of data transfer. Still, it depends on how popular you expect your site to become, but also, what your site delivers. Are you streaming video? Do you have a lot of images?

Just as an example, say each browsing session per user consumes 10MB (which is quite a bit, in terms of web browsing). You've got 1200 x 1024 = 1,228,800 MB to use.

Axe that to a nice round 1,000,000 MB to allow for other data flow between the server, you've still got room for 1,000,000 / 10 = 100,000 user sessions.

Hosting experts, please criticise if I don't know what I'm talking about

Re: bandwidth help

lcsaeteurn,

I agree with "aso", 1200 GB is over, over, overkill for most sites; even for most streaming video sites.

What I usually suggest to my clients: "Start small. You can always buy more storage space and bandwidth later."

Even if your site will eventually (hopefully) need the 1200 GB, it will be a long, slow climb to this kind of bandwidth.

Re: bandwidth help

I ask because a couple of the hosting accounts I am looking at now allow for 1200gb + storage (they probably mean 1200mb), and 1200gb+ bandwidth/transfers for about 4.99-6.99 a month, with free domain name and all, other accounts/hosting sites that offer less bandwidth/storage still cost about the same if not 1.00 less per month. Thanks for all your guys help, I really appreciate it.

Re: bandwidth help

sorry make that 1200gb+ storage and 12000gb bandwidth/transfers, some are even offering unlimited both, just curious, these hosts aren't actually lying are they? Now that I think of it, it seems a bit much to offer at such a cheap price.

Re: bandwidth help

lcsaeteurn, you might want to quickly read WESH's recent post on 'unlimited' hosting.

It's definitely worth considering before you buy into cheap hosting.

Holy crapola

1200GB of disk space
12,000GB of bandwidth

All for the price of 2 cups of coffee!!!! Good god....
Not being rude, but that is some SERIOOUS overselling!!!

ASO is spot on, that is an absolute TON of bandwidth and disk space, and even after having you for a customer for 2 years, they still have not earned enough money to pay for the 1200GB of hard drives to cover your service, even if 500GB server hard drives were $100 each.

The average 1U hosting server is not capable of serving 12,000GB of bandwidth each month because even with the latest CPU's, a server would be dishing out 428GB of data every day // 17GB per hour, every hour all day, non-stop, which is an absolute phenominal amount of data for the average hosting server.

That is of course assuming its only your 1 account on a server for that $6, now multiply that by the number of accounts on a shared server (Even if it was really really low like 50)

thats 850GB of pages/emails/FTP/Database data being served every hour, non-stop.

Personally, I think this whole overselling thing is like the credit crunch, eventually the bubble will burst as customers wise up to companies selling what they could never provide, then having it in the terms and conditions that there is a limit of x amount per month.

Imagine renting a car and being told "Unlimited mileage every month and up to 1000miles per tank" then reading the small print to find "Limited to 1000miles per month and the per tank mileage is dependant on vehicle type"

Thats basically whats going on.

A guy in the UK called duncan ballantyne did an excellent documentary on Travel agents selling what they cant provide (Thomas cook) where they constantly advertise in the shop window "Holidays from £79" yet he went to a ton of the outlets and not 1 of them had a holiday from £79 because when you add booking fee's, tax, flights etc it came to hundreds.

lol, am I ranting again... Sorry...
