hi I'm new and would like some advice

I am building a site for my girlfriends dad's business. it's only a really simple html site with information, contact information and a few images.

what do you guys think the best host for it would be?

Also, how do you work out how much space (as in mg or gig) i would need?

Thanks.

If it's a simple site like you say, and you don't expect much traffic, then I'd say;
  • 100MB space is ample, any more is no harm
  • 1GB of bandwith would be plenty
Regarding particular hosts, are you in the US, UK or elsewhere? Is price a (major) concern? (US are most often cheaper than UK).

Re: hi I'm new and would like some advice

cheers for the speedy response!!!

I am in th UK.
Obviously the cheaper the better but as it's for his business I told him he would be better off finding a host that doesn't stick a million ads all over it.

What d'you reckon?

In which case, I would recommend to get a UK host!

Don't worry, that's why you pay for hosting! Only free hosts will do that sort of thing.

I think WESH's 50MB shared hosting package would suit you fine. You could get even cheaper, but they have extremely good support and they know what they're doing

You may go for a free hosting deal, but then you'll have to get a few ads on your site, or choose a budget hosting deal, you haven't given lots of details as for the features of your site, but I think that any hostgator.com or mmhosting.com shared deal will do.

aso186:
Thanks for the recommendation, indeed, our 50mb package is one of the most popular for small businesses with brochure style websites and has enough monthly bandwidth for thousands of visitors a month.

MarbleHost.com package plans will be quite all right for you at first. Besides their prices aren't very high plus free bonuses. They are good for beginners.

I think a basic html site with just a few pages won't require any specific features from a hosting plan, you may probably want SSH access or not or any other freebies offered by hosts in the plans.
I know that Hostgator.com is running some sort of a deal at the moment, I think it's called Spring Deal. There are also shared deals from GlobalTap.com with lots of supported features in case your girl-friend's daddy's site needs any.

Re: hi I'm new and would like some advice

I think that UK is more expensive then US. I would recommend you US located web hosting company. Have a look at HQHost.net. They start as low as $1 per month. That is good and stable company

Re: hi I'm new and would like some advice

If your within the EU then you would be wise to keep your hosting within the EU to remain protected by the Data Protection Act.

Otherwise, you could find your data going down the same road as it does with PayPal.

(Signup for paypal wih a brand new email address and dont use it for anything else to see how quickly they sell your details and you start getting spam)

US Hosting companies dont have any such data protection act that would be of any use to somebody in the UK, plus speed and access times are better if your in the same country as your hosting.

Re: hi I'm new and would like some advice

If your on a budget, www.123reg.co.uk are a good deal (the starter hosting package) this will give you your hosting space, pop email accounts, web forwarding and a basic ftp manager - they don't provide an outgoing mail server if you have to set up email accounts under the domain name.

If you want to pay a bit more and have someone pick up the phone every time when you need a bit of help www.firstserv.co.uk are the people to deal with.
