All of these "Top 10 host's" dont actually have any baring on who really is the top 10, it should be called "Top 10 biggest advertisers who pay the most"

I think a good rule of thumb is to work it out from basics.

Cost of server (amortized over 4 years)
Cost of server in server farm
Cost of communications, phone, IPs etc...
Cost of qualified staff
Operating expenses, advertising, insurance etc...
Rent and taxes

Divide that by the number of users/domains you are prepared to put on a single server.

Add a reasonable profit margin.

With the figures I have for this:
For every US$ 10 a fair return is 3GB of disk space, 45GB of bandwidth +- 15%.
Anything below US$ 8 for the same return something has to give.
Anything below US$ 6 is downright dangerous.

Again - I am in the business of keeping my clients.

NB. That does not mean that a 50MB / 750 MB bandwidth site should cost US$ 0.16. Admin costs and service of a small site are similar to big sites.

Hello all.

I just thought I would add my two pence to this thread. I'm currently working on a web site that is hosted with http://www.streamline.net
I've not seen any down sides and they are pretty cheap. In 1 year (and a few months) the site has been up 100% of the time. I'm pretty new to web development so I'm not sure about "drupal" but they do have MySQL, PHP5, a choice of Windows 2003 or Linux servers and you can change server at any time free of charge. SSI, SSL, CGI, PERL etc
Oh, and their tech support are very helpful too!

I tried GoDaddy for a while but customer service was very poor.

Switched to http://www.rochenhost.com/

very good service all round

Well put Clouded. Users who come in here and just post a link with saying why or offering any feedback about what and why they feel that website is useful really should be ignored most of the time, as obviously very little thought or effort has gone into them making the effort to post a reply.
