Website Hosting - Any ideas

Hi All,

We recently upgraded our hosting but still find the uploads to be quite time consuming.

Any ideas on how to increase this without paying millions?

Your feedback woud be fab.

Thanks,

David Webb

Hi David

There could be many many reasons for this, but you have not provided any information for anybody to go with that might help.

How fast is your "outgoing" broadband connection?
What type and size are the files you are trying to upload?
Where is the server your trying to upload to, UK, USA, Australia etc..

If your trying to upload lots of big image files to a server in America, then you will probably find things to be time consuming due to the extra distance the data needs to travel, requiring more routing, more hops, and many many more miles than a server in the UK for example.

Could you possibly be uploading at peak times to a host that tends to "Oversell" their resources and their servers might be crowded?

We've known customers that have come to us and tell us how impressed they are with the speed improvements, only to find that they were previously using a hosting company that was just a "reseller" of an australian company and their server was actually based down under, but their resellers website "claimed" all servers were UK Hosted.

Try doing a "PING" from your own PC to your domain name and see how fast you get a response, then let us know how quick the ping response time was here...

Just send them a ticket to see how fast they'll answer you. or ask them to give you upload\download file.

Tankara, that really wont help him at all.

"Seeing how fast somebody will answer you" will be meaningless to his problem.

He also doesnt need them to give him a file to upload/download as he will no doubt have many files he can use to test upload/download speeds.

The best thing to do if he feels it "might" be the web hosting company, is to contact them via there proper channels and discuss the matter with them and express your concerns, politely and calmly and go from there.

If they are any good, they should at least help you to try and diagnose a few basic things (As I mentioned above previously) and they might be able to help you find the problem (If its not their problem) or it will lead them to know the problem is with them and they should get onto it right away.

Just dont open a ticket with them for the sake of "How fast can you reply" as that doesnt help anybody, and could actually give them the impression that your really not being serious.

But this ticket may show how fast the company works.

Yes, but the company employees are not sitting there peddling bikes that send out bits over the net...

You need to look at your hosting plan, to see what sort of connection you are supposed to be getting and then ping the server to see what sort of response you are getting.

You also need to look at your local connection, as this may also be the issue.

Just having a fast connection speed does not symbolise best host, IMO along with good connection speed you should also consider their support responce and their service, after all you need to get their help for some technical issues and setting for your account.

I think it's possible to send them a letter to check how fast they work.

This is pointless because some companies will get your support request and start looking at it straight away, leaving it open, and other companies might tell you "Were now looking at it" then go do something else, just so you get a quick response.

Speed of reply alone is NOT a measure of how competent a company is.

This code will help you.

?php
// Put all the php.ini parameters you want to change below. One per line.
// Follow the example format $parm[] = "parameter = value";
$parm[] = "post_max_size = 10M";
$parm[] = "register_globals = Off";
$parm[] = "session.use_trans_sid = 0";
// full unix path - location of the default php.ini file at your host
// you can determine the location of the default file using phpinfo()
$defaultPath = '/usr/local/Zend/etc/php.ini';
// full unix path - location where you want your custom php.ini file
$customPath = "/home/airlinez/public_html/php.ini";
// nothing should change below this line.
if (file_exists($defaultPath)) {
$contents = file_get_contents($defaultPath);
$contents .= "\n\n; USER MODIFIED PARAMETERS FOLLOW\n\n";
foreach ($parm as $value) $contents .= $value . " \n";
$handle = fopen($customPath, 'w');
if (fwrite($handle, $contents)) {
fclose($handle);
if (chmod($customPath,0600)) $message = "The php.ini file has been modified and copied";
else $message = "Processing error - php.ini chmod failed";
} else {
$message = "Processing error - php.ini write failed";
}
} else {
$message = "Processing error - php.ini file not found";
}
echo $message;
?>

we have been with Drupalvaluehosting.com not such problems with them, look at them once.

Thanks

What FTP client do you use. In our company, we have observed some slowdowns on certain FTP clients (probably misconfigured) then no problem with speed in the other.
