Domain reveal personal information?

Can hackers or anyone see my personal information like my address, my full name, ect. just for owning a domain name?

The reason I ask is because I noticed on GoDaddy they want you to buy this info protector type deal which has lead me to believe if I buy a domain and server, anyone who wants to know can find my address and full name? Is this true? If so, how do they see this? How can I prevent them from seeing this? Hopefully I'm wrong.

In the whois info from a domain, one can see your email, name and address.... I'm not sure, but I think this is legally required.

Some registrars allow you to hide this information (opt-out), such as Nominet (anything that ends in .uk), however .com domains require an address to be visible, so if you do not wish to reveal these details you will need to use a service like: http://www.domainsbyproxy.com/ who post their details instead of yours, and you can have any email sent to them forwarded to you.

You could just set up a PO Box or, you could do as some people I know, and just post made up details, though I wouldn't recommend the latter

Yes your address will be shown. The only way to stop this is to provide false information (against the TOS I believe) or sign up for a prviate registration which I belive they offer on network solutions but it's about £10 more.

But not all companies allow this private registration.

Most companies offering domain registration will allow you to protect your privacy so that it does not show up on a Whois search.

Alex, stop encouraging naughty behaviour.

Anybody found giving false info "can" have their domain registration taken away from them in "most" cases.

If you dont want it showing, then just opt-out of the .uk WHOIS, or ask your hosting company to put their details in.

We do that for quite a few customers, for free too, we just set the registered details to us (takes 10 seconds) and makes no difference to a lot of customers, except they maintain their privacy without exra charges for it like others bill customers for...

Re: Domain reveal personal information?

I find useful especially for business web sites their contact to be public. Don;t forget that the domain is nothing but web address. So why do you need to hide your identity...? Well if it is necessary then you can go for whois protection... as Alexgeek explained above.

- Not really, some registrars have Privacy Protection feature to domain names including .coms -- we do.

Is that feature free or paid?

Re: Domain reveal personal information?

best to register with your real details or with some sort of whois guard like namecheap offer as if your domain trader stops trading and you have phoney details then its next to impossible to claim your domain.
