Servers?

Hi All!
Right, I don't no to much about servers and what ones are needed and so on, so was wondering does anyone have any information about them.
I want one so I can host websites on them, so was wondering for some information about them, what are the prices roughly for a decent one, and where could I buy one?

Much help appreciated!

Re: Servers?

Hi, it's pretty hard to know what to recommend without knowing what sort of websites you're going to be hosting and what traffic you're going to be generating.

Can you give us some more info please?

Thanks

Re: Servers?

To be honest, if you don't know much about linux and running servers then you're probably best going with a managed solution which will cost a bit more. To be honest though, seeing as you haven't got the sites yet a dedicated server might be a bit much. I've seen servers go from £39 but they're totally unmanaged, so if it goes belly up your own.

I'm guessing you're going to be using a minimal amount of traffic at the moment so i'd consider your own server once you've actually started getting customers who will obviously be helping financially.

Re: Servers?

I don't think you will need a dedicated server for this....in fact you would be completly wasting your money if you got one.

Check out site5.com. They have a nice affordable managed hosting solution for you. Oh, and most of the Webforumz community can attest as to the quality of site5!

I recommended a VPS so that he could use that as a learning block sort of thing. They're very similar to a proper dedicated server and in my opinion MUCH better than managed/shared hosting.

I would also say that i've also heard a few negative things about site5 on various sites around the internet.

Do your research before buying.

Re: Servers?

The general opinion seems to be that a server is way too much for your needs. You just need to decide if you want to go shared/managed hosting or on something different like a VPS. If you want to get a server eventually then i reckon go the VPS route.

My advice is also, do a LOT of reading before you buy. I've read good reviews about site5 and i've read bad reviews, weigh up what people are saying and take the plunge.

I would also be tempted to look into how well the host you choose handles support.

This is very important and can mean the difference between you losing and keep clients.

Defo stay away from a dedicated server if you don't actually have any clients yet. But i said that in my first pm to you....

Re: Servers?

I'd also consider taking on two hosting packages or VPS's and testing them for a month.

Open support tickets with both and see who you think will support you the best....

Good luck.

Re: Servers?

Hmmm, I really don't think you need a VPS. Most people don't. You could host a fair amount of sites with site5's space. Me, Ryan, Pete, and several others all have a site5 reseller plan and love it. Their support is top class, and I have nothing bad to say about them.

Also you may want to look at hostgator.com, and or godaddy.com. Both have Full dedicated and VPS.

Let me know if there is anything else I can do.

Re: Servers?

Hi well, the plan was eventually I would go freelance as web designer! and i would host there website for them (so i could make more money)
But if i went for the site5, would I still be able to host there website and still charge the client for the hosting? or do i just refer them to site 5?

Thanks

Re: Servers?

I only recommended a VPS because he expressed interest in eventually getting a dedicated server! Are you saying that a VPS isn't a good way to get started on the path to fully dedicated happiness? Because that is why i'm recomending it...

Also, what is with recomending Godaddy? Seriously...

There are PLENTY of better hosts out there than hostgator and godaddy.

crackafaza, if you want managed/shared hosting go for it (i'm not against it) but if you eventually want a dedicated server then you wont beat a vps with ANY shared hosting package. Want a new webmail client for your customers? You can do it, in-fact you can do so much more with a VPS and you're not bound by your hosts config because you get total control over your part of the server.

Shared hosting is great but it is miles away from what you want to eventually move to (dedicated server) which is why you should go that way IMO.

Arent you on a shared account at the moment?

Re: Servers?

Well you wont need a dedicated server for what you're doing. Seeing as you have no customers at all i would get the cheapest package you can on a reliable host and go from there. If you want to move to a dedicated server eventually, get a managed one.....

Go to www.bluegravity.com for a more realistic look at what your money will get you..Hostgator oversell so much it isn't even funny.

Jacob, I can't believe you're recomending a host that offers 165gb storage and 5tb of bandwidth for $5 a month.....

Yes, you can host your clients. You simple add your new client within your web host manager, and you can charge them whatever you want.
