hello - just got a quick question that I hope someone can help out with.
I have designed a simple site for a friend and I am now wondering how to host it. I run a couple of my own sites so I am familiar with domain ownership and file transfer etc, but in this case my friend owns the domain name... how do I get control over this? Do I need to transfer ownership somehow, or can I make my content point to this address?? Cheers in advance. |

Re: domain transfer?
Domain name and hosting are two separate things.
So get some hosting, and log into the domain name's account and change the dns server addresses to the ones that the hosting provides. Hopefully your friend has the username and password for the domain name. Either the friend can log in and change the dns (domain name servers) or he will give the log info to you and you do it. |

Re: domain transfer?
thanks! - I'm still little lost though.
I have hosting through 123-reg. I currently run 2 sites, each using its own 'starter' hosting package. I plan to run this site on a third account. How do I log into this domain though? can I do this through the 123reg control panel even though it isn't mine? (provided I have the log in details) Unless I set up another hosting account, I don't see how I can change the DNS information... surely I need the domain name before I set-up the hosting? |

Re: domain transfer?
You're lost? That makes two of us!!
Do you have a domain name for site #3? Quote:
If you want to host that domain at 123-reg, then you will have to go to the account of the domain name, log in, and change the domain name server (dns) addresses. |

Re: domain transfer?
cheers again!
OK - yes, my friend has registered the domain name. I think I understand the process of changing the DNS addresses at his end, but how does this link to what I do with my WHP? Once the DNS addresses have been changed, what do I do then? |

Re: domain transfer?
Yeah, the owner of the domain will have to do it or give you the login info so you can. This will be done with whoever the domain was registered with not your host. You'll need to find out from your host what the dns names are so you can change them to the right ones.

Re: domain transfer?
You should be able to apply the domain to that hosting package. I don't know how that host operates so I'm not entirely sure. Do they not have a knowledge base or faq? That might have some of the answers you're looking for.

Re: domain transfer?
looked in there but can't find that specific information - everything I read assumes that I am already the domain owner and am wishing to transfer it from another registrar. I have a support ticket running but want to know now!
I understand the DNS bit now and have the new addresses that need to be inserted but, as these seem to be generic addresses, I cant grasp how this will enable my account specifically to have access to this domain...... agh! With my other sites, i simply select the domain/site I wish to work on from a drop down list and then I can manage files for that site. So how do I get this domain to appear in that list?
