Clicking on parts of banners

Hey, I am pretty new to website making and I have a question I was hoping someone could answer.I've seen on lots of sites (ie www.bostonbruins.com) that on the banner or other web graphics you can click on a certian part of the graphic,like the "home" on the Bruins main banner.Like it's not a button because it's a part of the banner in a jpeg or gif,but you can still click on a certian part like it was a button.

Can someone explain to a newb like me how this is done?

Thanks

Or image maps, but if you're going to learn the proper way, I'd stay away from images maps and navigation made from flash. Look into using xhtml and css to make your navigation (and all other parts of your site).

Re: Clicking on parts of banners

Theres so much javascript on that site its unbelivable.

As for the image maps:
Quote:
<AREA SHAPE="rect" ALT="" COORDS="83,10,176,23" HREF="/cybear/signup.asp">
<AREA SHAPE="rect" ALT="" COORDS="7,10,60,22" HREF="/default.asp">
is their source code for it.

Like herkaless has said, I would steer clear from imagemaps and flash.

As a noobie to design and development, we'd be doing you a dis-service if we did not steer you in a standards based, accessible direction (Thats the way the web is moving)
