Vector Graphics?

Hey,

I have some questions about vector graphics. I dont really know that much about them. I have just started getting into graphics design, but sense im only 14 all i have is gimp. but it works fine for me. I would like to start doing logo designs. i am told the i should get inkscape. how come?

So could someone explain to me what vector graphics do. All i understnad about them is that it gives you a cleanner sharp look, right? so would i need an editor to help me with logo design?
What else would i use it for?

Are vector graphics web safe?

Re: Vector Graphics?

In my experience (idiot terms) vector graphics are resizable. They also very rich in dpi so any graphic made as a vector can be enlarged, reduced without any loss in quality. You will not get jaggies with vector. Vector graphics are made mathematically unlike bitmap which is the only other type of graphic. The resolution output is very big. Perfect for logos. That's the only way to go really. I've tried creating bitmaps for logos and you run into problems if the client wants t-shirts, mugs, banner to hang on a building, etc.

Corel Draw is probably the most recognized most used by industry professionals.

I just searched google and found this freeware. I use this... http://www.xara.com/products/xtreme/default.asp

Re: Vector Graphics?

Hi,

There are two main types of graphics:

Bitmap - these files tend to be large and are used for digital photograpy images. Bitmaps are created by colouring pixels on a mintor screen. Formats include .jpg, .gif, .bmp, .psd, .png etc

vector - vector graphics tend to use a combination of simple shapes to create a more complex image. vector also use pixcels to create an image but the image is created using a mathimatical calculation, you dont need to understand these mathimatical calulation, you computer takes care of this for you, flash animation is a great example for vector graphic usage.

you can find more information at this lnk: http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/abo...tmapvector.htm

have fun and great to see someone so young taking an interest in graphic design. Seeing as you have a bright future take a look at http://www.blender.org/ , I think you will find this software very very interesting but it is very complex to understand.

p.s. Gimp is just as good as any graphic application. Here are some turotials to get you started:

Re: Vector Graphics?

Hey, whats already been said is basically word perfect on what your asking, but it sounds a little confusing saying mathematically.

Basically a simplified version of what has been said is that one type of imaging (bitmaps) is pixel based, so the image is formed by lots of little dots

Vectors however are formed by paths, these paths can be made as big or as small as possible but you dont lose quality because it isn't stretching anything

I hope that helped if you didnt understand the previous post
