graphics in general

Hi people,

I`m trying to make myself some new images for a banner/logo. I`m not coming up with anything that I deem decent. So I keep wandering from Freehand 10 (which I have slight experience with), to Fireworks (no experience), to Paint Shop Pro (slight experience), without really getting anywhere.

All this has me wondering, how many people get their images etc. from outside sources? Are all or most webdesigners proficient with graphics? Just wondering...

I would really much prefer to make the images myself. I`ve found a few cool features that seem promising (gradients, dropshadows), but does anyone have any advice/suggestions for a graphics novice? (I mean, besides just messing around a lot ) Maybe personal preferences, or ease of use?

I personally use Fireworks to create my standard images and use photoshop to touch them up with reflections or things that would be too time consuming to do with shapes.

Also if your wondering about images then i do sometimes use free clipart etc to blend in with the image (say i wanted a pic of a dog) I wouldnt waste my time and taking a picture of everything i needed when theres loads out there to use.

The truth is that you need to mess around with the programs to achieve the best results, but i would personally read a few tutorials of the basics, such as shape creating, effects etc.

I`ve read a fair amount of stuff and I think I`ve got the basics covered; guess I need to keep messing around- will check out the site you suggested.

Hope they`re freebies- I spent all my spare money on my computer! Now I have to justify the expense by making a decent website. Oh well, I`ll get there. Eventually.
