Adobe Illustrator is the best for that type of work. You can also use Adobe's Photoshop.

I love using Photoshop.
Took me a while to get into it but once you do you can produce some amazing logos.

I design most of my logo's in Flash. Flash is vector art (unlike Photoshop) so when I need a banner the size of a football field, I just stretch it and print. Saves me a lot of time trying to take a small ball and make it huge and look good.

Photoshop has vector tools, it just not as good as Illustrator. The pen tool in Photoshop is quite useful when I'm just making something small and I don't want to open up Illustrator.

ok lol just wondering because I've found some good free ones then found out that they have the watermark when you've finished it.. kinda stupid yeah lol.

www.cooltext.com is also free, it's a bit crappy to be honest in that your creativity is limited to selecting different combinations from their styles/fonts/colors, but they do have 1200 fonts - it's quite fun for a play if nothing else! Don't just stick to one of their naff examples on the opening page, pick a simple one there, then alter the font and color etc and make your own naff one

In fairness, you can come out with something fairly reasonable (honest!), depending what it is you want it for.
