Creating a 'sunken' image

I've been looking hi and low for a tutorial for creating a 'sunken' image to eventually be used for a Flash movie. By sunken I mean where there looks like a hole of sorts on the page where something inside is showing through.

Many times I've seen this technique used with a beveling effect, but the standard bevel in PS is a bit hokey looking, like those awful classic 'buttons'.... if you know what I mean.

So, any idea how to start this project, or perhapse a tutorial someone knows of online that might work for this effect?

I'm not entirely sure what you mean. If there are any examples out there you could show me then that'd be good.

There are lots of tutorials for bullet hole effects and things like that - perhaps take a look at many of those and the similiar tutorials to them (based on holes, bumps, etc) and see if any of them are applicable to what you're trying to do.

I ran across one site that had a very nice effect like that, but I didn't save the link. Also, my problem lately with tutorials for PS is that most of them are geared towards a higher version of PS than I have (I have 5.5).

In fact, I've attempted several tutorials and got about halfway through when the tutorial would come to a dead stop because there were instructions that didn't make sense to me---because they're using a diff version of the software.
