Banner Critique - Natural Disasters

I've just made a banner which I will use on a HTML website to be submitted to thinkquest.com february 2004.

Would love to see your comments. This banner is not the final version and I think it doesn't look really good and needs some touching up. However, love to hear from you all

The banner can be assessed at the URL below :

Thanks...

Ok... It doesn't flow as far as I can see. Your text is broken up; "All you have to know... about natural disasters" and one part follows "Natural disasters" which confused me even more - Maybe play around with that.

Your banner text (the very visible stuff) also seems a little clutterred around the bottom. Again, play around.
More importantly, your images are clearly seperate - I would do some work to incorporate them all in and blend between the three. Easier said than done, I know.

one thing is that it is a little too washed out. What I mean by this is you changed the opacity of the images so much that the whole banner looks like it has taken a trip through the washing machine. Try to add some darker colors to it. Another thing is the fact that it is Way too big. This is really only a problem for 800x600 resolution and smaller. If I might make a suggestion for a better banner.. YOu have till next JUNE??? Well, why not do this.. Why not Find a picture of lightning, make it very light and opaque. Then, find tons and tons of pictures of natural disasters and make that picture out of several other pictures.. This will be a very nice looking web banner, and it shouldn't be too hard to do with that much time. I understand that all the time can't be spent on the web banner, but since your working with a team too it should make it even easier to get done.

It is very cluttered and I expected that you'll mention that anyway.

Actually, the "All you have to know" and "about Natural Disasters" are supposed to be a single phrase. But I sort of 'split' them up to be kind of artistic, and that backfired.

I'm not very good with images, though so I expect that my friends will have a lot to touch up on for this banner .. lol

The washed out thing is not some opacity thing. Its some done thru a whole host of 'merge' effects ( you know those... IF LIGHTER THAN, IF DARKER THAN, ADDITION, MULTIPLY and all that )

Yeah, the 'washed out' effect is could also have turned out to be not what I want...

I have to submit this by February, the 'prototype' version and subsequently submit the FINAL version in June/July to Thinkquest.

Can you please explain again? Thanks

Are you allowed to use flash for the banner? If so what about: Make a banner with just one image say 700 x 120 px, some lightening at night/dusk making impact, with the explosion on the right of the screen. Then at the bottom of the banner have 7 or so sequenced images of the impact each 100 x 30px (cropped, spanning the 700px, and when you move you mouse over any of the smaller images, it slides up over the banner to full size (100 x 100px, slight opacity). You can then move your mouse over the bottom on the banner left to right and get a movie type effect and the audience will be entertained for a moment.

Code: Select all
+-----------------------------------------+
| main banner img |
| |
|_________________________________________|
|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|
Code: Select all
+-----+-----------------------------------+
| | img slides up on over of any |
| | bottom image |
|_____|___________________________________|
|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|
Just an idea?

Looks like a promising idea... I guess I'll use it. Thanks for your help ... But I think I'll use Swish to do that since its not that complicated and I don't want to spend too much time on it ( its only a small part of my web page )

Smokie, I know if I were to go into a banner competition, I'll defnitely be the worst of all! But I said a web design competition. I hope to win thru the use of a hybrid Flash and HTML page, with DHTML navigation, an innovative design, an image preloader, database scripting and all that.
