It can be confusing trying to learn image-editing software. I think most people struggle because they try to do really complicated things too soon, as with most things you should learn the basics first.

Anyway here is a list of useful sites which I have used in the past which have helped me:

Tutorial Sites
http://www.gimpguru.org/ - A site for GIMP users.
http://tutorialoutpost.com/tutorials.../photo-editing - Quite a few photoshop tutorials.
http://www.good-tutorials.com/ - This is the biggest tutorial site I could find.
http://www.eastofthesun.com/ - For anyone that might use photoimpact.
http://pixel2life.com - As suggested in the "learning photoshop or similiar" thread.

Free Software
http://gimp.org - A pretty good piece of open-source software for begginers.

Other Resources
http://photoshop.weblogsinc.com/ - A blog on photoshop

You should make an advanced comment, on what tools to use eg.. mouse, tablet...

When I was learning photoshop I used the tutorials section on http://www.deviantart.com there are some REALLY talented people on there

There are some great video tutorials available as video casts...

The ones I subscribe to are

- Adobe Creative Suite Video Podcast
- Adobe Photoshop Elements Killer Tips
- Photoshop Killer Tips
- Photoshop TV

I found them on iTunes, but you can just nick the RSS feed url from there and use your own podcatcher.

(although they may be basic for you lot, I'm not a professional, I do it for love not money!)
