Want to learn how to design sites with Photoshop

I am a complete novice when it comes to Photoshop but have seen some of the designs of websites that have been created using it.

Where would I start to learn to create sites like these? One example is Matt O'Connors site.

I know it's going to take lots of practice to do something like that but i need to start somewhere and maybe some good tutorials would be a good start.

I really like Lynda.com, as it's a video tutorial. So you get to watch what the professional is doing, just as if you were sitting beside him. There are probably some good tutorials here as well.

The only thing inside Matt O'Connors site that were design using photoshop is a simple gradient tools such as the green-black background and the feather wording at the bottom and left side.

I agree with JacobHaug. I've been learning photoshop from Photoshop7 untill the PhotoshopCS3 version and all of that I learned using Lynda.com video tutorial. It really amaizing.

I have with me all the photoshop tutorial links that I used to visit during my earliest stage with photoshop. Hope this helps

Re: Want to learn how to design sites with Photoshop

I have used photoshop for years now and just use it to give clients a good idea of what their page will look like before coding it.

alot of things are still done using html and css though, photoshop only deals with static images so no rollovers or anything.

Add me on msn and i will give you a few tips

haveyouseenmypen@hotmail.com

i find its always good for me to go over the basics as well

i just hope you get over lens flare and bevel and emboss before i get so aggitated with you i hit block

Re: Want to learn how to design sites with Photoshop

Is there much difference between what can be done using Photoshop 7 (which I have got) and Photoshop CS.

Can i use Photoshop 7 using the video tutorials from lynda.com?

Re: Want to learn how to design sites with Photoshop

From my experience, well technically there are many new features.. PSCS has some newer tools, and fun things that can make your life much less, and sometimes much more complicated. The newer version of photoshop (Photoshop CS3 or before that CS2) is much more exciting new features.

Lynda.com provides tutorial ranging from PS6 until PSCS3, so you just have to look into the tutorial for PS7. If you see the PSCS tutorial, some of the tutorial you'll not be able to do since the features only exist in PSCS.

Top 10 PSCS Features

The New Version Of PSCS3

CS has some nice features that help out, like holding shift to select multiple layers/sets, nice to upgrade if you can. Im still using 7 at home though, and its doing me fine but Ill upgrade soon as I have CS at work which I do occassionally miss.

Back to the topic at hand

Know that Photoshop is only used like pen & paper would be used: To draw a sketch/draft of what you envision your site to be.

nothing can be better than pen and paper! i always draw a website out before i photoshop it, it's alot better because then you know what you are trying to do when using photoshop. The best thing to do in photoshop to learn is just play about. Alot of people first start by making signatures. I hate making them now but they do help you alot with details and effects.

Re: Want to learn how to design sites with Photoshop

I use PS3 a lot for my picture editing like adjusting the color balance, contrast, saturation, some face retouching etc...

It's fun...

Re: Want to learn how to design sites with Photoshop

Always start with paper-you have no limitations. If you start in photoshop then you have some limitations.

(At least, thats what the web design company I did WE at said)

Re: Want to learn how to design sites with Photoshop

I start right out in a graphics program. I see things in my head as images, colors and forms so I don't need paper.. that would be a complete waste of time for me.

So I guess my point here is that everyone is different and there is no right or wrong.

Exavtly. In Web Design there is no right or wrong - just some guidelines that are recommended.

Maybe I overlooked something but didn't you have to pay for those?
