Okay. My website is an online community (though currently small) for artists, filmmakers, and writers. I would like some critique on content with this link and a critique on design on this link. The reason why is because I am currently in the process of redesigning the website and I want some opinion on how it looks. I am fairly new to these new-age web design concepts, and webdesign itself, so I kind of want to know if I am on the right track or not. I want this website to be visually appealing to artists, and have a modern design. so... anybody?

Web Redesign to be completed by 01/15/07:

Re: http://www.sabukudo.com

It's not bad. Here are a few things I feel a need to point out:
  • The text is too small! Very hard on my eyes with a 1440x900 resolution.
  • Your logo is aliased wrong.
  • Add some spacing between the items. Everything is so close together it's likely to just frustrate visitors.
  • Those white boxes at the bottom are odd.
  • Stick your CSS in an external file and call it with the <link> tag. Same with the JavaScript, only using the <script> tag.
  • Think about losing the tables. They're outdated and hamper SEO. A good XHTML website driven by CSS is better.

Design: 3 out of 5
Functionality: 3 out of 5
Code: 1 out of 5

Re: http://www.sabukudo.com

bruno89 - thanks. but the website was coded using old techniques, with little or no semantic coding.

ryanfeit - that's a pretty good size monitor resolution you've got there... as for the logo, if you are talking about the green face then it was a stupid mistake made back when I was a novice at photoshop. and the white boxes - they are actually supposed to be white lines, but I was fairly new to web design when I made it so they render wrong in firefox. and I agree about the spacing. and the css, well, that was stuck there by the forums and stuff, so... yeah. And I am already losing the tables, just not until 2007.

I've been working on redesigning my website, with a better color scheme, larger text, more space, etc. all in semantic code, so you probably won't see tables where you don't need them. the link is http://www.sabukudo.com/sk2/septemberedition/ . (keep in mind that it is incomplete, so there are useless javascripts in the header that need to be deleted, and the title still isn't there. I think.)

but thanks for the advice. and I know it's not really that great of a website and all... it was like my 2nd web design ever.

To say it's your 2nd design ever... you show promise... it's not that bad. My advice, however, is work on your coding standards on the next couple of sites you make....

Cool Re: http://www.sabukudo.com

Regarding this page:
http://www.sabukudo.com/sk2/septemberedition/

What I like: the lay-out, the ease of reading (color impact), the fonts used, the background pattern, the arrangement of the menu.

What I dislike: the green is too bothering for me.

I do like the overall impression.

Re: http://www.sabukudo.com

yeah, the green is pretty vivid. but it is my favorite shade of green (a5da26), and I'm not gonna let go of that. but what I was actually going to do was give the members the ability to switch between different themes on the website, much like you would do with forum themes, except it applies to the entire website. this is incase someone doesn't like green. I'll be sure to have a good variety in there.

thank you very much for your critiques!

Re: http://www.sabukudo.com

I think the design is quite nice, the title font is very cool, I think the content should be in shorter chunks of info. A footer would be good also, with a back to top link.

Re: http://www.sabukudo.com

for the green one? okay cool. I'll add a back to top thing. and I was going to make a footer but I haven't really gotten a chance to yet. and the content on that page was just something that my friend wrote and I copied/pasted it in there just as an example.

I'll work on this some more.
