usdmanciano.com

After lots of errors, lessons learned and a little more experience, I've managed to get this site somewhere near where I'd like it. it's in Italian but you'll get the idea. Any feedback is welcome.

Many thanks

Re: Italian football website revised

It's not THAT bad.
I don't like it, but I can see that many people would.

That said, there's a lot of room for improvement.

- Validation (only 6 small errors, not bad)
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=ht...anciano.com%2F

- Get rid of the tables. You don't need them.

- Use text for navigation, not images

- I like the changing logos, but with such a big image it looks weird that it's just floating there. put it within a container that will wrap the entire page, or remove body padding so it touches the top of the screen. The logo should blend into the body of the page. at themoment it looks like any other image.

- Last but not least, don't like back to /index.html, link to /

I don't speak Italian so would you mind explaning the purpose of the website?
Is it the club's official website? Is it a fan site? Are you a fan of the club?

Re: Italian football website revised

Thanks for the advice. I've rebuilt it without tables and with text navigation, and it also works in Firefox (apart from a couple of glitches, which I'm trying to figure out.) I've also validated all the code, but I still get errors from a cut and paste swf file. I'm aware that I need to fix that.

The site is for a semi-pro Italian club, which I'm trying to help generate some cash and put some supporters in the stands (without using photoshop!). The early version was my first attempt at web design and the revamp is intended to be slightly more professional. If it helps, calcio means football. Also, if you're really bored and want to smile, put the address in google and select 'Translate this page'.

Any further feedback appreciated.

Re: Italian football website revised

It's quite a lot of information all jammed together. Makes the mind wonder around looking for a focal point, sort of like "Guide me, what do I need to read first, where do I go".

Work on some white space with padding and margins to break things up.

I also feel you need more color to make the headings pop. Use the red from the logo would probably work well.

Maybe be more selective on which areas get the thin surrounding border and which areas can do without.

Just continue tweaking things here and there and try to look at your site from a new visitors point of view.

If you want to center the page on the screen, use this:
Code: Select all

<div style="width:780px; margin:auto;">

your page

</div>

Re: Italian football website revised

Thanks for the tips, some of which I have already taken up, others i'll think about. I know that the page is quite 'busy'. This is for a couple of reasons. One was that in doing my research I visited lots of premier league football websites and the better ones seem to be those that have lots of quick to read content. I've tried in some way to emulate this style. The adverts will hopefully generate some revenue so I deliberately made them stand out so that they would be easier to sell, but if the colours annoy then it defeats the object. For now, I've made the turquoise one white.

I started the site because the club didn't have one and I wanted to learn how to build one. Thanks again for all the help.
