I'm a genuine novice, and this is my first site.

I would never design for money, and plan to help out not-for-profit and community-type groups - time and design ability allowing.

There must be a lot wrong with my site, so how about everone just highlight's a single failing. I mean, you got more important things to do other than to help me. But if you want to provide more advice, that would be really appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: My First Website

Not bad at all, way better than my first site
1. Try and get it to validate. Most of the errors are because you are missing the alt tags.

2. The links at the top are images, they can be done in text using CSS. Either way, they need a hover effect.

Re: My First Website

Pretty good for a first website.
Instead of the header image I think you should just have a green background and use CSS to put place actual text there instead of an image, this would give you a boost in SEO,

Re: My First Website

If you used Css and no tables it would be much better. Some on the images were slow to load Nice Site!

Re: My First Website

Not bad, although very texty.

Scrap the tables and code properly. It will pay off. Also, make sure that ALL links have a hover effect. This is especially important in your main navigation.

Re: My First Website

Well I'm not going to comment on the code as this is your first website.

Your design however I will comment on. The part where your text is on a white background doesn't have enough separation from the background of the website. They are both white so it needs some separation there, either a new color or a border of some type. I'd recommend giving the background a darker color and leaving the text portion white.

The green on the top portion doesn't look that good to me. Maybe something a little richer here... like a blue, or a forest green, turquoise... something to give it more Umph.

Not bad for a first site.

Re: My First Website

Looks pretty good for a first website, maybe a light background colour a cream, or a mellow colour would sit nicely.

But you are doing very well.

Re: My First Website

As people have said, well done on your first site, looks very good

However, i would really consider using CSS for layout, not only does it make your site more manageable, it's better for SEO(search engine optimisation), and also increases load time compared the the slowing down affect of tables.

Here's a reason why not to use tables

As for using CSS for layout, a google search will give you 1000's of results, but here are two of the best places to start

Hope this helps
