Re: Web design wales

Hey Mark!
The site looks good on initial 2 second reaction time.

You've got some work to do on the code however. You are using tables to design and since you are web design firm, should be handcoding using div's rather than tables.
You have 317 errors on validation which is serious.
I would suggest moving away from images in your navigation as well. It's better if you use text on top of an image.

The header image is over optimized. It's very grainy.
I also get the impression this is a template. With all the little double arrows on the left navigation and the boxes with ++ signs in them. If this isn't a template, then I'd suggest using different symbols for uniqueness.

There is also too much clicking. When I go to the services page, I'm faced with yet more decisions for clicking. Why can't the services just be listed on the services page?

Hope this helps!

Re: Web design wales

This is pretty good.

"Affordable web design" is obscured by the man's head and arms. It takes some effort to read that text.

Your scrolling news item does not belong on the page. It takes up a whole column of space and is worthless. Actually, it's worse than worthless: it's a distraction. Remove it.

The "Links" page is of dubious value.

The code is bad. "<table>s for layout" is the old, clunky way of designing. Learn some CSS, and validate your HTML and CSS.

Re: Web design wales

Not a bad look, although I agree its very template-ish.
I also noticed the image is overly optimized I suggest using a png flattened at 24bits, or jpeg at quality of (over) 85%.

The links could use some spice in that column.

2/5 - So far anyway.

Re: Web design wales

Some very good pointers already made.

I most definitely agree with Mike on the News and Links. Neither seems to have any relevance to your site or industry.

Ok, the sweet tooth article is a serious issue, but it feels very out of place in a web design news section.

Plus what is that 'Take a poll' tab in the sidebar all about? It does nothing!

Re: Web design wales

First impressions on the design are good, i agree with what the others have already said.

I would not however use you to to design my website, for a web design company to have 317 errors is in my opinion unacceptable, and to be honest tables should be completely replaced with CSS for design.

sorry for the harsh criticism, but that's just my opinion.

I recommend looking into using CSS for layout, there is a good article in last months newsletter

hope this helps

Re: Web design wales

There seems to be some pixel/noise problem happening in your "affordable web design" text there!
It's a low quality image, isn't it?

Re: Web design wales

I like the design, especially the color difference in the menu.
Lose the tables, go for CSS..
Shorten the news.. I don't care for news that's 3 weeks older than the top story..

Re: Web design wales

Other than what the others have said about ditching tables the only advice i can offer is about your navigation. You have different hover effects for every other tab. Not good from an accessiblity standpoint. it gives the impression that the tabs may do something different. since they all do the same thing, lead you to another page, make the hover effects all the same.

Re: Web design wales

I agree with minute, Unless you have pop-ups your tabs should be the same..
Anyway, hope we're not to harsh your design is good only a few changes to make it great.

P. S. Suggestion; It almost looks as if you have ad sense space, on the news side. If you get traffic consider putting ad words or other form of advertisement (weather for your services, or from other people for a fee of course).

I would be cautious putting adsense on a site that sells web design services. You don't want to distract potential customers with ads!

Adsense pays pennies, and is only worthwhile for sites with large amounts of traffic.

Better to concentrate on clinching your own sale, rather than distract them with ads. Worst of all, they might be ads for your competitors!

Re: Web design wales

Okay True, but you could add ad sense specifically for stuff you don't offer that helps, or you could stick your own ads there. Advertising about your hosting, and web services, even boasting about standard that you comply with.
