A portfolio site of HTML,CSS and Typography, not a great deal there yet but I'm working on it. I just completed marking up Lewis Carroll's 'Alice', take a look and let me know what you think, thanks.

Re: 2lb

I think that this is too early for us to give any critique to your site
It's just a simple HTML page with text, links and a nice JavaScript counter script there..
Other than a valid CSS and HTML, it's just to simple. No offense there mate, but this is a really simple page that I could easily do in MS Word.

You might want to learn CSS for page styling. After you have done all that stuff, post your link back here and I am sure a lot of us will give "response" to your site.

Cheers..

Re: 2lb

I don't think you even looked properly tbh "mate", it's supposed to be minimal, it has css, and the main focus is on the subsites, but thanks anyway. And the lord only knows why you would want to design a web page in MS Word...
And that's 'too'. God that's annoying...

Re: 2lb

LOL... I am just saying that "literally" mate.

Meaning to say that your site is in the early stage for us to give any comment.
You don't have any style yet. It is just too simple and we don't know in what aspect to give comment to..! (CSS doesn't just mean giving your div and ID or specifying your link hover effect and that's it )

CSS is more that that! A typical website should have a banner at the top (with logo or whatever you like), some navigation menu, div positioning (float left, right div or left div, float right., etc...) and a footer. All of them is styled with CSS (not just specifying their margin or padding..) but with color, graphic, font style, etc...

Even if I disable the CSS in your site (with web developer), it just looks the same!
The only major difference between them is your font size which I think it quiet ridiculous to put it as that big.

You might say that you already mention that your site is in the early stage. That's why I suggest to you to work on it first and when you finish with "styling" them, then you can get back here

Take a look at all the other website in the critique forum and you will know what I mean
Complex website are hard to be "copied". That's what I mean by "I could easily do in MS Word" because there is not much style in your page at the moment. If you want, I could do a better layout with just my MS Word LOL

Cheers..

Re: 2lb

Look Mr. ASP Advisor, I just don't think you're getting it. I've designed more web-sites than you have had hot dinners and I think if I see one more curvy corner, drop shadow or 2advanced Flash animation I will lose my dinner.

This for example is one of my commercial pieces circa 2006. Here's some of my old illustration. I can do all that b***ox. I'm trying to do something different for my own site.

It's supposed to be minimal. It's a minimal page of links to conceptual html, css and typography work. Go and practice your ASP chump and don't bother me with your coder design knowledge anymore. Cheers.

If that is your view why have you posted in the critique? Wake up and take the advice, because I agree with moonie. Compared to your first work in your above post, your E-Portfolo is nothing. It's too minimal. It looks like something my brother could make. It shows no skill at all to be honest. I know you have skill, I can see that from your link, but your E-Portfolio has to show it.

Re: 2lb

You see 2lb, this forum is for us to critique any design submitted here (in the critique area) so that the designer of that site will be open to accept not only POSITIVE feedback but also some NEGATIVE feedback from all the member here so he or she could do something to improve from it. Any changes or what ever it's up to you to decide. It's your site after all..

Quote:
...take a look and let me know what you think, thanks.
If you can't accept any little suggestion with your current site, then what is the purpose for you to post it into here? To get what?Tell us?

I thought that you would react positively (as everyone else do in here) to every single comment of feedback that we gave you! We are not here to make you feel stupid or down with your design or what ever you call it, it's just how the critique world are. So live with it.

If you can't take the heat, then beat it!

And the link you gave us, well that is not CSS my friend. It is just some image gallery without any style in it and not to mention all the CSS and HTML invalid code with invalid doctype added to it. Your portfolio, please refer to jackfranklin as I don't have no time for this nonsense!

So are you willing to learn more, or you would like to stick with your current design there?

Re: 2lb

Ok, maybe you have a point, perhaps I was a little harsh and it is a little too minimal at this point. I was rather hoping that you would take a look at the 'Alice' work I've been beavering away at.

I do know that I don't want it to look like every other web-site out there with listamatic lists and I don't particularly want a nice banner and some jazzy colours - I want people to look at the work rather than focus on the home page, and black, white, grey and possibly red are good for me.

Ok hit me with it, no hard feelings. Jeez I thought I'd got over being touchy about critique...

Re: 2lb

Ok, First that is not my "embarrassment" statement to you! It is my constructive critique in fact it is a tips for you so that you could look into your code and perhaps validate them.

Second, on your Alice page, in terms of design there's not much to talk/critique about at the moment since not much style or graphic going on there. In terms of the GUI, you could make it horizontally centered on your screen. Adding some color here and there might make user interested to read on it

Re: 2lb

Ok, thanks Monie, I think you're probably right about centering the content.

re: colour - The original Tenniel drawings were b&w, however they have been coloured over the years by various artists, mostly still under copyright however. There are other issues, for example some of the images were designed to fit alongside with the text flowing around them, which would mean chopping the images which I'm not sure about...

A search for Alice on Google brings up around 5 and a half million links, so it's nothing new, but I'm kinda proud of it.

Sorry for calling you a chump...

Re: 2lb

Lol

Ok, I have a joke for you, lighten the mood. Joke : -

A guy is walking along the beach in Africa, when he finds a bottle, opens it and out comes a Genie. The Genie says, 'Thank you for releasing me, a thousand years in that bottle, your wish is my command.'

The guy thinks, then says 'ok, I've always wanted to visit Rio, but I don't want to fly, please build me a bridge.'

The Genie says 'You know how much that will cost? How many slaves it will take, how many lives will be lost? Have another wish.'

The guy says 'oh', thinks again, and says 'ok, I've always wanted to know, what is the meaning of life?'

Pause.

'What colour do you want the bridge?' replies the Genie.

Bridling at criticism is a natural reaction, but it doesn't help you improve your website. Of course, your critics may be wrong; but you can only benefit from a critique by considering their ideas unemotionally.

Anyway...

I like the first subpage set very much. It's an exquisite reproduction of the story, with the original illustrations (I assume you've checked copyright issues). The chapter nav down the left-hand side is beautiful (but ideally the boxes would stretch with the font size). I'm delighted to see accurate typography on the web (apostrophes, em dashes, and so on).

I would like to see the whole thing centred on the page. Left-aligned web pages feel awkward in large browser windows. It's a matter of spatial balance.

The homepage is bare. Your fondness for drop caps is misplaced here; don't use a drop cap effect on link text: it's confusing and ugly. Drop caps require other text flowing around them.

The horizontally-scrolling "52" page is sub-poetic wank. You can call it "conceptual" if you want.

The "101 celebrity" page is worthless. Why is it there?

Quote:
It validates as XHTML 1.0 Strict
Why brag about this? Why would your readers care? Since when did a printed book say, "This book was typeset by experts, and printed on high quality paper"?

Re: 2lb

Here's my initial take on your site.
I would not have seen it as minimalistic. I would not have seen it as different. I simply do not get it at all. Are you a web designer, graphics artists, storyteller?

I don't know what the site is about, I don't know what you are trying to convey, and I would click off of your site within a matter of 10 seconds.

I don't mind that it's black and white but I'm not wild about it being left aligned.
I think it's great that you are trying to do something that hasn't been done before, but I'm afraid sometimes that can also hurt you.
In this case, I have to agree with the others, it's not ready.

I think you need to add some information to let us know who you are and what this site is about and what service you are offereing.

Hope this helps..

Re: 2lb

well that is, erm, basic, to say the least. I'm afraid you have lost minimalism and gone into nothingness, IMHO.

The following is still minimalist but looks great.
