Any thoughts you have on this site would be much appreciated. It's in beta, and the subject matter is pretty obvious - directory site of green/ethical companies.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Green England

Hi Rob

I think you've got the makings of a good website, but there's still quite a bit of work to be done. The layout is all over the place with things overlapping (well in Opera it is anyway) - I saw on another thread that you're having some problems with your floats and your divs, so maybe that's just not sorted out yet. There are a lot of errors in the coding which isn't helping.

I'm afraid I don't like the bright pink and orange on the site, it's not that I don't like bright pink and orange per se (I do!), but when your site is based on a natural, earth-friendly theme, they kind of look like artificial colours. I would go more for brown earthy tones along with the greens. The orange might work actually, but not the pink (just my opinion!).

I think you need a bit more narrative content on the home page to hook people in to browsing the site more and to help with SEO.

Sorry for sounding negative, I do think it's a good site, with a good purpose, and I think it will look very professional with a bit of tidying up.

Vanessa

Re: Green England

Thanks very much Vanessa. I think you might be right about the pink - I'll try a brown instead. As for opera, I've had enough trouble with IE and firefox (on which the site displays more or less correctly now) - haven't even thought about opera yet! Must tackle those errors.

BTW, which part of Kent are you from? I'm a Sidcup man born and bred...

Thanks again,

Rob

Re: Green England

Don't you just wish sometimes that there was only one browser in existence!

I'm just outside Canterbury, have been here for about 5 years now (grew up in North London, then Cambridgeshire, then back to London, then Las Vegas, and now Kent!).

Yes, there should be only one browser, and that is Mozilla Firefox!

I quite like your website, semantics. Its nice and colorful, but maybe it needs to be a tad bit darker. Your graphics also need a bit of work. Theres lots of jaggies there at the moment.

On the left hand side, I think the text could be spaced out more, because at the moment, it reminds me of Google ads.

Just tidy up a few things and you'll have a great site!

Re: Green England

your buttons eg the one to the left the drop shadow is far too big and the text needs to be a different colour.

this is a different font size which doesnt look consistent.

Re: Green England

Oops.. see screen shot below

I couldn't find a way back to the home page once I left it.

I agree with Vanessa about colors too. The lime green in the navigation is a bit too light for the white text as well.

Good job handcoding! That always brings a smile to my face!

One thought on the homepage. Would you consider making the lower four divs (newest products, newest days out) the same width as the div above with the four buttons in it?

Very nice site. I can see huge potential. Good job and good luck!

Re: Green England

Sorry for my delay in replying - have been very busy! REALLY appreciate all your comments (although I'm slightly irritated that this page ranks above my own for 'green england' on google!!).

Will definitely go back and change things as a result of your advice.

Thanks again,

Rob

Re: Green England

To me ... the whole "Go Green" or "Be Green" thing ties in with Web 2.0 since it is a new fad (don't get me wrong ... we should all be conscious of how we treat our planet) and so ... when I go to a site that talks about that subject, I'm expected to be WOW'ed and here ... I'm not.

The colors are just too drastic (the yellow and orange and pink).
