The home page is mine. The links are done to another designer's pages linked with the company I am working for.

An email I got from the designer for the link companies. Want your opinions please.

From designer through company director

Need to set window size as small screens have to scroll. Am in process as you can see it's still under construction

It's wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to wide! I don't want to scroll left and right to see the design.
It seems pretty cool to look at but when you shrink it down, I'll have a better look!

Ok don't understand width, as both laptops this end show it fitting width wise just not vertical.

Ok confused now, why would it resize on 2 laptops at this end to fit screen but not on others? Have now resized the page and it looks rubbish. It now does not fit screens, help!!!!!!!

My computer is set to 1280 x 1024
1 of the laptops is set to 1280 x 800
and the second laptop is running on 1280 x 800

Ok, all your machines have a resolution 1280 pixels wide.
But the standard is 1024x768 (or if you want to be strict about it, 800x600).

For browser width, I say you can compromise at 900 wide, although I almost always make my sites work in 800x600. I have a 1680px wide resolution now, but my browser window is about 940 pixels wide.

I only ever go as far as 770px, which allows for toolbars and a little spacing on the sides

Same here except when the client adamantly refuses something so skinny. Happening to me right now, and I'm not going to spend the time to do a JavaScript style sheet switch depending on page width...

well, there are ways that don't require javascript (width:96%, etc...) but it's not worth the hassle... You can't design your pages properly because they might be wide or narrow, etc...

using 1280 as the base width is madness though
