My online portfolio showcasing my web designs, client works, graphical concepts, and more. It is in flash, but I have made it really userfriendly to make up for the fact that it is not in html/xhtml like most of my sites. All the content loads in externally from xml and the site loads fairly quick.

Re: Online Portfolio - TimSilva.com

I'm gonna say the same thing I said in the other forum you posted this on

It's not bad. Why is it so darn small!?! The text in the menu is VERY hard to read without a magnifying glass.

The text at the top of the Services page is totally illegible so is most of the text in the contact page.

Everything is crammed up in that tiny little space. It would be a good idea to have an HTML version of the site. Sometime, people like to print out portfolio for future engagement and in your present state ... that is not possible.

The colors are nice and the bubbly futurist design I guess is pretty good but ... IMO, it's too small.

Re: Online Portfolio - TimSilva.com

I believe he designed for an 800x600 burt even on that rez it still looks to small. I'm not a fan of flash sites being that so many things can go wrong. But yours is ok. I'm not going to say great because i dont like falsh but ill give you an ok. props...

Well I'm a huge fan of the "look" of flash. I've always been impressed by them no matter what the downsides. So looking at it, it looks like a work of art to me. Fix the illegible text and you have a winner flash site!
Love everything from the cube (?) to the background...

Re: Online Portfolio - TimSilva.com

I don't see anything in Safari 2 It's just a completely white page... I see the HTML and all when viewing the source, but nothing else works.

Looks nice in Firefox, but you really need to get it working in Safari; it's the default browser for OS X.

Thanks for pointing that out!

I don't have a mac, therfor no safari, but I just embed the file with swfobject so it is now xhtml valid

Anyways, could you check it for me now and tell me if it works in safari? I checked all the other browsers already.

Re: Online Portfolio - TimSilva.com

Oh, I know what it is! Safari isn't at fault, it's me. I have all Flash disabled unless I specifically activate it with a click of the mouse. Since the Flash detection .swf file is only 1px by 1px, I can barely see it. I'm not the only one who disables plugins, so you might want to make that detection file a lot bigger, or look for another solution.

Re: Online Portfolio - TimSilva.com

Aha!

Ok, I added some quick text that says, "Detecting flash version..." -- Thanks or pointing that out. I know lots of people who use the method I am using, in fact is comes from Adobe. Hopefully that text will help.

Re: Online Portfolio - TimSilva.com

Ah, you don't understand, though. If you could make the actual flash file bigger, I'd be able to activate it (or even see it), but right now it's so small, All I see is "detecting flash version." Could you somehow make the detect file larger and horizontally and vertically centered? Or does it have to be small?

When I see a Flash movie in my browser, it shows up as a gray box with text "Plugin - Click to Activate." So with the detect version being so small, I have to click my mouse on that exact pixel for the detect movie to start.

Re: Online Portfolio - TimSilva.com

Actually, doing my best to click it, I couldn't. I don't know why that is, though...

Re: Online Portfolio - TimSilva.com

Hey, I think I figured it out. Clear your cache and try again.

You shouldn't even have to click on anything now.

Re: Online Portfolio - TimSilva.com

Awesome! You still don't understand why it was happening to me, though. I literally have Flash disabled on my system unless I click on the space where the Flash file sits on a page (i.e. a 640x120 Flash banner ad or a YouTube video). So when I see your site, it now looks like this because you made the detect thing full size. Before that whole gray box was just a single pixel in the top left corner of my screen that was nearly impossible to see. While I'm probably in the tiniest part of internet users that use something like this, it's always good to make sure it works no matter what. Congrats on figuring it out and it's lookin' great!

Now, this is what I see before I click on the Flash file:

Re: Online Portfolio - TimSilva.com

Ok, so now all you have to do is click anywhere on the page, correct?

btw, this is all Microsoft's fault. A few months ago they decided flash was a threat to everyone's computers because Adobe was becoming a threat to microsoft. They are putting flash developers through hell.

Re: Online Portfolio - TimSilva.com

Haha. Yeah, now I just click anywhere. This is all my choice, of course. I don't like Flash advertisements because they slow down my computer, so when I actually want to see something Flash, I just have to click on the object.

Re: Online Portfolio - TimSilva.com

heh, thats cool man.

Thanks for pointing it out tho, at least now it is set up in the most effective way possible. I can't wait until flash becomes safe to use, although there is a big chance that will never happen.

Haha, I'm surprised someone hasn't come out with Signed Flash files. Buy a certificate to ensure it's good or something and it'll play without problems.

Re: Online Portfolio - TimSilva.com

Ya, thats not a bad idea at all. It might be somewhat hard to manage and enforce, but it could work.

I still am sticking with blaming microsoft though, just because

Why blame anyone else when you can blame Microsoft?
