Portfolio Site. How do I achieve this look?

Hi, Im making a graphic design portfolio website.
I found these examples:

I really like the way that when you click on an image, the screen dulls and the image comes up in front bigger. I would really like to achieve this sort of thing to show my designs.

Does anyone have any idea how to achieve this, or where I could get a tutorial or code for it? Or what its called? I don't know if its flash or java or whatever.

I don't know where to start. I'd really appreciate your help!

I should add that Slimbox is a great mod on the original Lightbox - virtually the same capabilites yet incredibly light (just 7kb!)
