I need to know about Gradient fill operation

I need to change the color(gradient) of a circle in a movieclip on mouseover through actionscript. When i searched the net i found a way to apply gradients but everytime it needs to create a graphic throuh drawing methods. Is there no way to apply gradients for existing objects(circle) in the moviclips without having to draw a circle through drwing methods.
