Is there a way to Tween kerning?

THIS --- in 10 frames becomes --> T H I S

This is what I have attempted, and failed.

First attmept:
I have a button. Button text kerning set to 0. Keyframe it.
I move it to a new location. Keyframe it. Motion Tween. Change the kerning.
Both locations now have the new kerning. Doesn't expand as the movie plays.

Second attempt:
I have a button. Button text kerning set to 0. Keyframe it.
Target the button to go to a certain frame. This frame has normal TEXT replaceing the location of the button. Text and Button are identical.
Keyframe the text. Move it to a new location. Keyframe that location. Tween them. Change the kerning.
Text moves to the new location, as expected, but doesn't expand.. instead, on the last frame, it explodes. Not quite what I am wanting.

Is this possible to do, or would I need to have each letter as its own text to move on its own.

Read this article, I don't think you can do it with a tween, but maybe with some action script?

Egad. That looks nice, but a bit too over the top for my needs. Parts of it I can use though.

Even so, it'll be a bit before I can dissect what I need form it.
